A. Paper lor- the People, ORAKQEDURQ, S. C, JjJLY 30. 1S80. Hop.?There was quite a pleasant hop at tho residence of Mr. Meyer last Wednesday evening. Quite a number of young folks attended, and enjoyed the mazy dance until the wco ema' hours. Picnic.?Quite a credi'.ablo Sun day School picnic was held at llcthlo hem Church in the Fork some two weeks ago; aud the children are dis appointed that no account of the mat ter appeared in the Democrat. Our friends are to blame for .this. Wo know nothing of it until too late to make a note. Serious Accident.?A colored girl, about fourteen years of ngo, while sitting between the ends of the cross ,ties on tho Railroad was knocked off by the out-going train on Monday morning lost und had her arm badly crushed. Tho bands on the Engine did not discover the girl until it was too late to slop the train. The girl was an idiot. What Is it??Mr. G. II. Cornelson is hauling a large Steam Engine from the depot to bis now brick building which will soon bo put in position to drive something, but nobody, except himself, knows exactly what. With his energy and enterprise, it will not surprise us if the hum of the spindle be heard in Orangeburg in less than a month. Success to the enterprise. Improving.?We learn from a! friend, that Mr. J. W. Moseley, our worthy Mayor, js now at Glenn Springs Hand well pleased with the place. Ho feels belter and stronger that for months beforo, and will re main there to give tho water a fair test. Wo do hope Mr. Moseley will realize his most sanguine expectation and be able to return to bis family completely restored to health. Off kok Hkndeusonyii.le.?We learn that a shooting team, consisting of Dr. M. Cr. Salley, Messrs. J. A. & ?D. J. Salley, 1\ G. Cannon, and Mr. N. II. Hull have gone to Henderson ?vi lie to shoot for the championship of the South. We expect to hear an ex cellent repot** from these gentlemen ;and would not be surpri cd if they make tho highest >eore. Messrs. . Dan K. Suioakand T. M. Raysor tie-j .compnnicd them. Ma or. met owx Match.?Every body is familiar with the nitre ofj Swift & Courtney, in connection with matches. Mr. Courtney's d uightor, Laura, seems to have inherited her father's tendency to make those at tic Jes, but wlllj hardly And hers so pro fitable. She recently ran away from her homo in Wilmington, Delaware, with a hired roan. Her father has offered a reward of $2,500 for infor mation regarding her. Don't Forget It.??Somc time ngo we remarked that a bridge would be put up a cross the Railroad opposite the Five Notch road by Section Master J. G. McKewn for the con yenenee of our citizen in the Eastern portion of the town. The work is not yet done, hut we presume will be, just as soon a3 Mr, McKewn can give his attention to the matter, lie is pot a man to fail or disappoint in an improvement of this kind. Jks So.?The decline and fall of the shirt collar i3 the leading event of these days. In the morning the col lar may be as spotless as the record of eaoh raau's favorite candidate, as shapely as a civil service plank in a platform and as tall as a campaign lie, but before night it is sure to be ns dirty ns anything but the town streets as shapeless as any of the late lamen ted booms, and as depressed us the hopes of Republicans who have been searching for mud to throw at Han cock, Welcome.?We were glad to sec Mr. E. L. Salley, a son of our esteem ed friend Dr. A. S. Salley, in town on Sunday last. Mr. Salley some years ago moved to Texas and found for tune 8tniiing so propitiously that he determined to make that Siale his adopted home, After a short and pleasant visit to his relations and friends at Orangeburg he will return not, however, without many delight ful reccollcciions of tltc scenes of his early childhood in our midst. In Mr* Salley Texas secures a most, worthy citizen while wc of Orange burg part with an esteemed friend. ESCAPED.?On Wednesday morning a prisoner, Peter Williams, escaped from jail while engaged in taking the slop from the rooms to the yard. Mr. l'celc, the jailer, fired at him tu ice with a shotgun but too far to damage tho fellow much. Williams was awaiting trial on an indictment lot cow stealing. This is the second time prisoners have escaped under similar circumstances. Could not some arrangement bo made whcie-by tho jailor, who has no one to help him, might have this work done with out allowing so much freedom to the prisoners cngagtd in it! Dots.?Several communications are crowded out Ibis week. Mad dogs and cows uro reported in the neighborhood of Brnuchvillc. Our thanks arc duo T. K. Saspor tas for a sample of his excellent pea ches. "* The Kdisto River is on the rise and bathing is indulged in frequently by . the boys. The case of Alexander Lauglin has been continued to the next term of court for Richland. It. is Raid some of our gun team can break ten balls out of a possible j ten. Good shooting. The enthusiasm for Garfleid and Arthur in our town is marvelous. It reminds one of the graveyard. Mr. I*. \V. Hydrick, who was re ported very ill some time ago, is now convalescing and will soon bo out. Hanging is a capital punishment, especially when you arc hanging on some good looking fellow's arm?isn't it, giils? The stables of Dr. J. II. Smoke, near Jamison, was struck by light ning on Wednesday last, which kill ed a line mule. Walking matches arc quite fashion able among the young people in Or ajigeburg. Go ahead if you think there is no hereafter. Those people whose hair is turning gray should use Hall's Vegetable Sicilian Hair Rcnewcr to restore it to its natural color and vigor. The chandelier recently purchased for the Methodist chinch is in posi tion ami is quite an ornament as well as useful improvement tu tho church. In a crowd of six men stumbled over by our reporter last \Vcdn0sdu3 live were found to bo candidates, and the sixth said he would not decline if nominated. Hon. S. Dibble is repainting and fitting up his law oflicc and otherwise changing tilings generally, all of which will boa decided improvement upon tho old. "Wo rcgrot to repart the serious ill-i ness of Mr. James Dukes during the week, but hope the moans being em ployed for Ids recovery will be bles sed with success, Mr. D. if. Avinger, of Vances' Ferry, has purchase a part of the Hudson lot near the railroad, and was in. town thia week to arrange for building a residence. The census returns show that a col ored m:Tu is living in Fair field having j a thihl born' in 187? named Daniel! LI. Chamberlain and another in 1677 named Wade lihtnpton. Cattle Creek Campmceiing is now in progress with every indication of an excellent meeting. Wo learn that 11 any of our town folks will attend to-morrow and Sunday. Among the possibilities for Orange burg within the next decade, are a I steam boat for the Kdisto, a street railway and gas lights. AH these have been spoken ol and are proba ble. Attention, Orange Light Dragoons, There will bo a company drill at the parade grounds on the 2nd Saturday in August at 2 o'clock A. M., sharp. Uy order of the Captain. J. S. Rowe. Secretary. That is, wc happened, in company with some friends, to be vis iling sonic young ladies that were complimented with a serenade by the band on that evening. High seasons have prevailed dur ing the week and reports from many sections of the county agree that tho cotton crops arc tine but may be seri ously injured if the rains continue. Peas a'c generally planted as pro paralory to the oat crop, which prom ises to be largo. j Sallic Spriggins, one of our rural sisters, had her picture taken tho other day, and tho likclcss was won derful to behold, but no remedy like Porlnline, o.t Tabler's Vegetable Liv er Powder has ever been prepared.
