Kf.v. T. P>. Bovi>.?On last Sunday

town was occupied by ReV. T. B.
Boyd, lortuely a citizen and merchant
ol the town. Mr. Boyd has recently
entered the ministry and already
gives promise ol great usefulness to
the church of bis choice. His Ser
mon on Sunday night was full of fer

ed a degree of ability which few
voting pi caches are aide to bring to
the service of the church. Its ell'eet
upon ihe large congregation in at
allcndaiice was very maiked and
especialy so upon fhv.se who were his
associates in former days. Well
educated, possessed of more than or
dinary talent and of a winning ad

ornament to the church and a faithful
laborer in the vingard of Jus Master.
Wc bid him God speed.

Escaped.?On Tuesday morning
last Mr. Peel, the jailor, brought two
prisoners down to get water. One of
them, Cherry Butler, was allowed to
go to the well and the other kept in the
house. While getting the water
Butler dodged around the well and
ran. Mr. Peel fired at him twice, ev
idently with effect as the prisoner
fell and seemed unable to go fut'thet.
The prisonor, kept in the house, was
returned to his room and afterward
search was made for Cherry Butler
but to no purpose. Ho made good
his escape and is now at huge.
Criticising Newspapers.?It is a
very, easy matter to criticise a news
paper, but to publish one, so as to in
terest, amuse and instruct the public,
is no small undertaking. Those who
are so prone to find fault with every
little item which does not suit their
critical and exalted ideas, should buy
type, ink and paper and publish an
organ of their own. Lei them try it
for three months only, and if it don't
give them some new ideas of thej
newspaper business, then we are no
jtulg? of human nature. The conceit
would be taken out of such individu
als so quickly that they would baldly
know what was the matter with them
or whether they stood on their hands
or their feet.
Tub Methodist Distinct Confer
ence.?The Orangehurg District Con
ferenoj of the M. E? Church, .South,
convened at St. Matthews on Wed
nesday evening, tho 12th instant.
The opening sermon was preached in
?the Methodist Church by Uev, .John
A. Moo I, and on Thursday morning,
at ten o'clock, the Presiding Elder,
Uev. Manning Rrown, celled the
Conference to order. The organiza
tion was completed by .be election of
Mr. .John E. \\ utinamakcr as .Secreta
ry, and the Conference entered at
once upon the business before it. .
Reports from the various points in
the District represented the several
interests of the church in a flourish-1
ingcondition. Bishop W. M. Wight.-!
man arrived on Friday, and entered I
at once upou hia duties as presiding !
olliccr of the Conference. His gentle j
manners won the all'ections and Iiis]
timely advice; guided the meinbets
satVly und wisely through the remain-j
ing business of the Conference.
The following gentlemen were elec
ted delegates to the Annual Confer
ence to meet in Mai ion rest winter :
Rev. B. A. McKibbcn, Dr. .J. W.
Snraui'ts, Mr. Jus. Stokes and Rev.
.lohn Inabinet; alternates. Messrs. J.j
E. Wannumakcr and P. V. Dibble.
The matter of building a district
parsonage on the church lot in Or
angehurg was thoroughly discussed
by the uiembois, and it was decided
to build the parsonage as soon as
twelve hundred dollars were collected
and in hand ; and in this connection
iL was very distinctly slated that the
building should not be commenced j
until that amount was actually in]
hand.
The discussion upon the different]
plans for raising funds for the vari
ous purposes of the church resulted
in favor cd' assessments by the slew
aids as the most successful and satis
lactory in its results. Illackvtllc was
selected as the place where the next
Conference shall be held. Aller the
usual resolutions of thanks to the
citizens ol St. Matthews, the railroad]
an i the Baptist eongresjalion.tlte Con 1
lerencc adjourned with ike benedic
tion.
On Saturday evening Uev. W. \V.
Duncan, oi W of ford College, made a
in .st excellent speech o.. ieli??ioiis
education, in which he took sullleicnt
latitude to administer a timely rebuke
to politicians and to make some se
vere but deserved criticisms upon the
times, political, e-iminal ami social, i
Prof. Duncan was unusually forcible j
as well as felicitous in his remarks on i
t'-ai phase of character based upon a!
religions education which he believed
to be the only hope of the country. >
Rev. Win. Mai tin preached on Sat
urday night, when he took occasion
to present the Washington Street
Chuech, Columbia, to the congrega
tion.
Bishop Wight man preached one of
his characteristic sermons on Sunday
morning at 11 o'clock before the lar
gest congregation, perhaps, ever as
sembled in St. Matthews. Feeble as
the good Bishop appeared to be, he
held the close attention of that large
audience lor more than an hour.
Dr. T. Raysor preached a most ox
col lent sermon in the Baptist Church
at the same hour to a full house. In
deed, we heard some of his bearers as
sert that the Doctor beat the Bishop.
A mass meeting of the children
was held in the afternoon at hall-past
three o'clock when Prof. Duncan, Mr.
L. B. Haynes and Rev. O. A. Darby
made addresses.
At eight o'clock in the evening
Prof. Duncan preached a missionary
sermon before the Ladies' Missionary
Society. This ended a scries of
meetings, the influence of which we
hope may be fell and seen lor years
among the good people of Si. Mat
thews.
Rev. Sidi H, Browne visited the
Conference on Saturday. He looks
well and seems strong enough to car-j
ry his little Neighbor triumphantly
through many years, and by dint of
many a hard battle to conquer peace
at last.

Floral Fair.?The most criminal
indill'cji nee \vc have ev9r witnessed
in regard to any enterprise was that
which manifested itself in tlie want of
patronage to the recent Floral Fair
intended to he held by tho Orange
burg Agricultural and Mechanical
Association at their building on Fri
day last. We arc sure it was no lack
of interest on the part of our people
in the success of the fair, since the)
have ever been active in the promo
tion of all undertakings that have foi
their object the prosperity of the Com
munity ; nor was il due to tho scarci
ty of (lowers or garden products, for
this is the season when these ubuund
in their greatest profusion ; the only
satisfactory theory to be found is that
spirit of indifference which waits, for j
another to do what is every one's
duty. It is criminal in as much as it
leaves a duty unperformed and an
important interest imcarcd for.
The directors bad gone to some ex-1
pense repairing the building for the
occasion and making the necessary
arrangements for the success of the
exhibition, with the reasonable hope
of realizing enough at least to defray
these expenses. The failure to do so
was a severe- "disappointment and
threw such a damper over the spi its
of the directors as will, in all proba
bility, prove the death of Floral Fails
for years to come. In this much the
community ol Orangeburg is the loser.
Not knowing the extent of the disap
pointment we proceeded to the Fair
Building Friday morning about 11
o'clock and foucd only a handful ol
laities and gentlemen discussing the
propriety of abandoning the enter
prise and returning the articles on ex
hibition to their owners. The pros
pect was indeed gloomy and perhaps
the better wisdom prevailed when it
was decided 'o close. In examining
tire articles we were peculiarly struck
with their merit without a single ex
tiou. The largest collection of flow
ers was furnished by Mrs. W. N'. Sco
yille, embracing choice varieties ol
Geraniums, anil beautiful specimens
of the Cigar plant, Begonia, Lanlana,
Fucbia and other Cuoicu varieties ol
mir hot-house plants. Mrs. J. L.
llcidtman was equally fortunate in
her selection of Geraniums, Cactus.
Fucbias and a rare specimen of the
Wax plant. A Calla Lily, Cactus and
verities of the Geranium furnished
by Mrs. Kirk Robinson would have
won the general praise of visitors;
so likewise the specimen of Arabian
Jussnmine and Wax plant of Miss
Leah Robinson.
Of the vegetables Mrs. K. It. B.irton
bad the most extensive assortment in
cluding Beets, Cabbage, Onions, Cu
cumbers, etc., all of the present sea
son's growth. Mrs. Immanuel Ricken
baker contributed largely in Cabbage.
Turnips, Peas, Beans, etc. Her col
lection embraced about twenty-live
varieties?all choice and well ma
tured. Mrs. .lames StokeS bad Oil
exhibition the liucsl Turnips we have
yet seen besides a splendid contribu
tion of Beets, Onions, etc.
A basket of beautiful cut flowers
was furnished l?y-~Mrs. Dr. Sail y ;
also a vase of wild flowers by Mr. W.
T. Mullcr. The largest and (inest
specimen of Hollyhock we have seen
was the contribution of Miss Bottle
Hurley. It has seldom been our good
fortune to sec so line an exhibition of
artistic taste anil skill as we witness
ed n a curiously wrought Lyre and
Harp by Miss Annie Culler. These
were made by extensive cuttings of
wild ami gatdcu flowers, beautifully
mingled.
Dr. W. F. Barton and Messrs. J.
L. Moorer, John ltowe and O. W.
Culler furnished most cxccllcn'< sam
ples of their Wheat and Oat crops
which were perfectly free from rust,
well matured and indicated a heavy
yield of these grains.
