The gin-house ami grist mill, be
longing to Mr. W. M. Williams, at
Midway, were destroyed by fire on
Friday night last. The loss is heavy
but is said to be partially covered by

An exchange has an article on
"How to run a newspaper." This
should be read only by editors, as
every other persons in the world
knows just how a newspaper ought to
be run.
The long spell of dry and unsea
sonably hot weather was ended on
Friday by the beginning of gentle
showers. The weather is now cool
and heavy clothing in demand, but
the showers are loo late for the crops.
Love is like a river, if the current
be obstructed it will seek some othei
channel. It is not uufrequently the
case that the attentions bestowed on
the small boy are intended for the
marriageable sister. How is it, boys?

other night, the horse of Mr. D.
Gardner, near Knott's Mill, became
frightened at one of the little animals
and broke his thigh. Mr. Gardner
had him killed to save suffering. A
dear hunt.

we grow up, scandal mongers takes a
fellow in hand and lie about him un
til he kicks the bucket and journeys
to that uudipcovered country, where
the secrets of all hearts shall ho un

The white school population in
South Carolina for the year 1878 was
86,678, the colored school population
for the same year was 152,290. The
number of white scholars in attend
ance upon the public schools was
54,lu8; the number of colored schol
ars was 62,121.

several parties have been convicted
of various crimes, and have been sen
tenced to the penitentiary for terms
varying from one to two years. The
court adjourned last Tuesday but
will be called again this morning
when the remaining civil business
will be disposed of.

The jurymen before whom was
tried the case of tho State vs. Adam
Miller remained in the room all night
and unlil after the court convened
next morning before they could agree
upon a verdict. An ignorant and
prejudiced colored preacher was the
cause and could not be moved by
curses or blessings. A second charge
from the Judge, however, brought
him to terms.

quisitive title of a new book. Well,
since that look of contemptuous scorn
fastened upon us by one whom we
thought an angel just here on a vaca
tion from glory, wc have concluded
that life doesn't amount to a row of
pins, and accordingly have sent for
the most poisonous kind of Limbur
gor, and shall waft ourselves peace

Lucius Bellinger, colored, went on
Saturday last to the house of one
Ancrum, a colored man living on the
place ol Capt. N. N. Hayden in the
Fork, to enquire about certain rumors
about himself, said to bo put in cir
culation by Ancrum. One word
brought on another until they got to
blows and from blows to the pistol.
Bellinger received two wounds, one
in the face and tho other in the abdo
men?the latter of which at tho time
was considered serious. Since, how
ever, we learn that he is doing we'll
and his injuries arc Blight.
A young Kcntuckiau named Thomp
son, who was happily engaged to a
fair widow, got intoxicated while in
the company of some exciting com
panions, whereupon the lady broke
tbe engagement, dcclniing site would
never many a man who drank. This
decision :-o worked upon tho man's
mind that after moping about for a
few days ho descended into an unused
well and held his face in the shallow
water until dead. Wo suppose he
caino to the conclusion that there
wore too many fools in tho world, and

The investigations made by North
ern newspaper reporters have put bc
youd all dispute the question as to
the ability of tho colored man and
brother to sneeze. It seems that his
nasal possibilities are about equal to
those of the white, and that, perhaps,
ho is the bigger sneezer of the two.
We are glad that this vexed question
has been satisfactorily settled, as we
were vci'3' much afraid that it would
prove a disturbing element in the
next campaign.
A Romeo in the city, says the
Charleston Sunday Times, ono night
last week went to serenade his best
girl, choosing a selection from "Pina
fore" as an opening piece. In a voice
trembling with emotion and a tenden
oy to split on high notes, he began :
"Farewell, mi-love, light of m?,"
when a four pound brick was wafled
though the midnight air from the old
man's bed room, lodged in the very
vitals of his guitar, and the concert
stood adjourded.
We regret to lcam that our friend,
Mr. Joseph Loryea finds it necessary
on account of pressing business en
gagements to leave Orange burg and
return to California. Mr. Loryea
came among us fifteen months ago
comparatively a stranger, and by his
gentlemanly deportment, even and
polite manners and honest aud fail
dealing has drawn around him a large
circle, of friends who will regret this
decision and miss his genial greeting.
We wish for him the best fortune and
as man}' and as true friends as those
he leaves behind.
We were at, the depot Wednesday
evening last when the exclusion
trains passed on their way to Charles
ton, and, at a rough guess, we would
say there were '2,000 passengers
aboard the two trains. This number
was increased by a hundred more
from our town ami county, including
ladies, farmers, doctors, dentists,
lawyers, merchants and loafers. Mr.
Receiver Fisher is doing a great work
not only for Charleston but our coun
ty towns, ag every excursionist, before
going, buys a new *uit of clothes
which would not be done were there
no excursions to Charleston. If the
hotels, restaurants, etc., would give
the snrao excursion rates there is no
telling how much small change would
be spent. Try it gentlemen.
The Association of the Baptist
Church met at Lcwisvillc on Satur
day last and continued through Sun
day. Quite a large number of per
sons were in attendance to hear the
gospel preached and were air ply re
paid for the trouble. The preaching
wan excellent and effective ; indeed
specimens of eloquence were indulg
ed in at times rarely heard in our
country churches. It is said the hos
pitality of the citizens of Lcwisvillc
was boundless and cordially extend
ed to every one and as cordially en
joyed. On Sunday the pulpit of the
Mothodtst church was filled by the
Association and there was manifested
throughout a spirit of love and fel
lowship which should ever character
ize the intercourse of Christians with
one another. After a vote ot thanks
to the citizens of Lewisvillo for the
generous hospitality extended and to
the Methodist congregation for the
I use of their church the Association
' adjourned.

bagged tin? clothes and returned them
to the merchant from whom they
were purchased.

The Fair of tho Edisto Rifles hold
on Thursday and Friday of last week
in the Elliott Hook and Ladder Hall,
was a complete success and its gene
ral management reflects credit upon
those iu charge, and especially the
ladies whose handiwork might be
scon and admired at every step. The
hall was beautifully decorated with
evergreens and flowers; the tables
were Idled with choice articles on ex
hibition, some of which can scarcely
be excelled for fineness of texture an I
beauty of finish. We saw articles of]
needle work made by hand which
equalled tho best samples by machine
ry ; boqucts which maic one think it:
was midsummer instead ol the mid-1
die of October; cakes audjjjfruit, most
tempting to the eye; a five cent
counter literally crammed with dolls
and toys for the little ones; and a
hnndrcd other things too numerous
to mention. The poslofnoc, ballot
box nnd dice box were called in re
quisition and proved no small source
of income to the managers. On Fri
day night the articles remaining on
hand were sold at unction and it is
no telling at what per cent profit they
were sold. We are informed that the
net proceeds of the Fair amounted to
the sum of 8101.81, which will be ap
propriated to the purchase of a new
uniform. This is in excess of the
calculation made and may bo consid
ered an index of the interest felt in
tho welfare and success of the Edisto
Rifles. It has been suggested that a
uniform similar to that of the Gover
nor's Guards.be bought. While this
uniform may be very handsome, we
know of no dress which becomes the
military character better than the
Confederate grey.
