A Son* Bird la (bo Capitol.
It happened during a vacation be
fore congress convened that an un
known lady etrollod into (he rotunda
of tho capitol. There was nobody
about but the guides and n.few tour
ists, and a couple of friends who
w re with the unknown suggested
to her that she try tho acoustics of
tho hall. At first she demurred., but
the idea seemed to fascinate her. As
'die stood silent for a moment, as if
coiling for her accompaniment,
.omething in her easy pose suggest
ed famiharity with the footlights.
Then She lifted up her voice and
sang —easily and unaffectedly as a
Lii-d—and such ringing! It was only
n simple old ballad, but', tho voice
was pure and clear, the phrasing fine
and elocution Excellent.,. ' ''
But this was not all. ^ The echoes
of the great dome awoke and joined
in the song until it seemed magnified
and expanded into a 'jvhple great
chorus. Tho guards and’ guides
crowded in to hear this impromptu
concert, and even the anxious sight
seers, who had allotted 15 minutes to
‘ do tho capitol," paused to listen."
It was grand, it was inspiring, and.
the singer seemed to enjoy this renl-
Ixatiou of her art, which she could
never attain iu an ordinary hall.
When she jiaused, a round of ajv
plause awoke other echoes until it
sounded like the tribute of a great
audience.
And then
situation, departed, and h I
as she thanked the doorkeeper, that
she had sung in many halts, bijt .
none like this, gave rise to tho sur-
mise that she was not unknown to
fame.—Washington Post.
SOME BIG EQUINE LEAPS.
Thirty-four Feet Certainly Cleared In the
English S(ce]>l.eeliase of 1847.
One of tho moet^remarkable jumps
by a horse on record, is that by
Chandler, a steeplechaser, while run
ning in the Leamington cup race at
Warwick, England, in 1S47. Tho dis
tance covered iu one leap has been
variously measured. For a number
of years it was thought to Lave been
29 feet, but tho editor of the sport-
ifig paper in which tho record was
first published afterward explained
that' this was a printer's error and
that the distance was. in reality 27
feet. This in itself is big enough—
so big, in fact, that there' are many
horsemen iu England today., who
will swear that i£ is exaggerated.
The portion of die: race in which
this jump occuhed is reported.'as
follows in a description of tho' ra,ce
in the issue of March 2S, 1847.
“This left tho lead with King of
the Valley, but ho refused at the top
of.tho hill and soon after Regalia
caught up with him. They raced to
gether to tho brook, with Chandler
following them. Chandler's
pdlled back as they apprbacbod it, ex
pecting that Regalia would bring
grief to somebody, and when they
arrived at it sent the spurs into his
horep and followed them with all
steam ' pul Doth went into, the
brook, and 'while they were there

A Viiluablo (Stocking.
Edward Hutchinson Robbins was
speaker of the Massachusetts house
of representatives in 1793. Hisgrijnd-
bon, who describes him qs a man of
untiring kindness, “whoso desire
was to bless and serve others,” says:
Stephen Brewer, who knew him
well, told me once that when lie was
a clerk in a store in Boston the old
gentleman walked in with a gray
stocking in his hand, the foot of
which was full of Spanish dollars.'
“Stephen, my little man,’’ sjiid h.c,
“take care of this for me; it's a new
stocking, and my daughter Oassy knit
it for mo.”
So Stephen put it-away, arid grand
father forgot it from that hour, hut
three months later ho came into the
store in much affliction. '
“Stephen, my little man,” said he,
“I've lost a stocking like this,”show
ing the mate, “and I'm so sorj-y ! "My
daughter Gassy knit tbetn,
tenderly, “and I would not lope £hcin
for anything.” / '.
“I produced the stocking with tho
Spanish dollars tied up in the.foot,"
said Stephen, “and there was no af
fectation about it. He really leafed
fore about finding the stockihg ihat
filter badHcnit for him than
the money.”—Youth's

| " The, account goes on to say that
i Chandler won tho race with ease.
Tho length of. the leap was immedi
ately measuml, but there was jsupio
doubt as fo where tho animal had
landed,'as'the ground was soft and a
number.of hoof prints had been
inado. £aptain Broadley', the rider,
wkq 'seems to havo'been amodegt
person, said that tho distance was 37
fpet. This beat tho recqHl’iis faj. as
known,‘the best previous pm-fbrm-
anco having been that of Lottery,
. who cleared between 33 and 34 feet.
. One of the witnesses of tho jump
was William Archer, father of tho
famous Fred and Charles. Archer,
and ho was willing to swear over
afterward that tho distance was 39
feet. F. Sawley, a. well known
sporting writer in England, was also,
on hand,,and he has declared, in.,i
recent article that tho tape meapujred
but 34 feet. This is the minimum
estimate. Summing up. it may bo
said that while there is some doubt as
to the exact jiumber of feet cleared,
.Chandler's performance waaauun-
usual and important one.' «
yhe samo may be said ot a horse
called Proceed, who'is sqid to have
cleared 37 feet while running in a
steeplechase .about tho time of tho
above event.. A horse called Culver-
thorn is yeportod to have jumped 39
feet on ono occasion, and Lather, a
buuter owned by ono Lord IngCstrio,
is said to havo jumped 37 feet 5
inches over a pit. None of these
measurements is absolutely autheu-
tic.—Bell’s Life. ,
