.The Traffic Death ®f Mayor Harri
son of Chicago.
Not since the murder of President
Garfield at the hands of .a miserable
assassin has the country received
such a shock as it did on Friday
night when the sad intelligence was
flashed over the wires that Carter
1 larrison, the mayor of Chicago who
was to take a prominent part in the
closing exercises of the World’s Fair
and who had done so much to make
it a success, had been shot down in
his private residence, in cold blood
and without any provocation what
ever. Mr. Harrison was one of the
best and most popular mayors that
the city has ever had and his untime
ly death caused universal sadness
among all classes of people, and it
was only the coolness and courage of
the police that saved the murderer
from being immediately lynched.
The murderer requested to see Mr.
Harrison on business and as soon as
him
and that the Legislature, whenever I
it saw proper to do so, coeld put
someone else in his place. Mr. Snm-1
ner was always reelected however
dispite the manner in which he ig
nored instructions.

each one can be settled without 'mat

and his body lay in state in the city
Hall all day Monday and was viewed
by thousands of sorrowing people.
The closing exercises of the World’s
Fair, for which elal orate arrange

possible suspended and the day closed
in sadness End gloom and with the

A Very Uupleasant Surprise for Our
People.
On Friday the very surprising in
telligence was recieved that Mr. J.
M. Waddell had been appointed
Postmaster of the Town, and it is
very hard to say which feeling pre
dominated, surprise or itdignation,
for if ever a people were indignant a
too much method to allow the

did not save bis neck from the gal

his immediate family.

A Minister Says that Goi iu
Wrath Saote Harrison.
Baltimore, Oct 30—Rev. Dr.
Henry M. Wharton, pastor ot the
Brantly Baptist Tabernacle, and who
recently, in Chicago, assisted Rev.
Dwight L. Moody in the conduct of
a series of evangelization services, in
a sermon on the theme “Ged’s Judg
ment,” thus, as he is reported in thel
News, called the attention of his
congregation to the tragic end of
Mayor Harrison, of the World’s Fair!
City.
“It seems as though God Some
times rises in his might and in his j
wrath smites those who oppose him.
Mayor Carter Harrison, the chief ex
ecutive of the city of Chicago, was
shot down and killed. Who was
Carter IIrrrison ? He was the rep
resentative of the element who burled
defiance at the laws of God and
man.
“When the Law and Order element
of the city said the saloons must be
closed on Sunday and that gambling
must cease, what did Mayor Carter
Harrison say ? He said the saloons
shall remain open on Sunday and
gambling shall go on. Where is
Mayor Harrison now ?”
The preacher, after a pause, an
swered his own question—“He is|
Dead.”
It would be difficult to couceie of
anything that shows a greater lack
of charity than the above expressions I
indicate, and if tne minister who
gave them expression is a typical
Christian, then a great many people I
will have to change their ideas of |
what constitutes this true spirit of
christiauity We are at a loss to un
derstand how Dr. Wharton knows
anything more about the workings of
God’s providence than any other of
his creatures, and it would be well
for him to bear in mind the solemn
words of the Savior, “Judge not that
ye be not judged.”
Mr. Harrison had his faults, as j
who of us has not, but there must
have been much that n as good and
noble in his nature or the countless
thousands of the poor people of Chi-1
cago would not have shed their tears
over hie remains. It does not often
fall to the lot of anyone to be buried
amid the lamentations of a whole
people.

offic i a 1 s . imgL. h e 1 objections I
to Mr. Wa$dilf"cuf^K.C
a very few words. He is
vjC a resident of the town; is an
avowed advocate of the Ocala de
mands and consequently not a Dem
ocrat; has never rendered the least
public service to the people or to the
Democratic Party, and is generally
believed to have b-.en a Republican
in 1876 when the white people were
making a supreme struggle for exist
ence. We have no personal preju
dice against Mr. Waddill, but rea
sons given above are sufficient to ex
plain the objection of the Herald to
his appointment.
Of course it was to be expected
that Mr. McLaurin would do every
thing in his power for his Populist
associates, but he could not have se
cured this appointment without the
aid and connivance of Senator But
ler who was supposed by the Post
master Genera) to represent the Dem
ocrats of the State. The Senator
has dug his own grave, and for him
there will be no political resurrect
ion, He is simply blind if he does
not see the hanwriting on the wall.

hope that they will thorougtil^

ness, but even if this body fails to
act, tha newspaper can be counted on
show what an utter piece of folly and
absurdity the law has been. Morally
it is doing do good and financially it
is practically a failure.
The popular idea of a representa
tive in Congress or the Senate is
that of a mau a ho is to slavishly
obey the instructions of a caucu j or
a party, and not to exercise his own
judgement as to what course is best
for the good of his emstituents.
According to this notion anybody
who can be pliant and ebedient to
the popular will, can make a repre
sentative and high character and a
knowledge of public affairs are not
at all essential, in fact, if this idea is
to be the rule, the less cultuae a man
has the better he will Le enabled to
follow instructions as to how he
must vote. It would be well if some
of the Southern Senators and repre
sentatives would remember the manly
independeece of Charles Sumner,
who would not even recognize the
right of the Legislature of his own
State to instruct lum in regard to his
duties, his invariable reply to these
instructions being that he was in the
Senate to repreresent his State and
to do the best he could for the wel
fare of the country, and that he in
tended following his own judgement
as to what was the best course to
pursue in furtherance of this object,
