Miss iiale AMett. The State, Richmond; Va.— After seeing Miss Abbott there can be no few of stating that she is all that is claimed for her, and the exhibition is at once wonderful, novel humoroua and interesting. Herald, Chicago.—Miss. Abbott is said to get $1,000 for each perfor mance, and the Alhambra is crowd ed nightly as never before. Charli. Mitchell tried to lift her and utterl failed. Standard, London.—Sir Wil liana Thompson declared that it was a phase or rather a manifestation oi electricity which he did not under stand. Graphia, London.—An exhibi tion astonishing beyond reason and genuine beyond doubt Globe, London.—One hears nothing but “Annie Abbott” All London is wild with enthusiasm. Marvelous, wonderful, inexplicable little woman. Times, London.—The wholt performance made a profound im pression. It is wondered if Mi» Abbott has unconsciously found th< means of using the thousafb of foot-tons of energy that Prof. Crookes says are locked up in every cubic foot of ether that fills all space. To Sabserlhers. All subscribers to this paper should have aiready received or will receive within a fow days statements of their accounts. A number have already made settlements, and we hope that others will respond promptly. The accounts are all lu small sums nnd each one can be settled without mat erial efforts on the part of thoee in debted to us. The large number of these accounts due makes the aggre gate sum quttajarge audit is important that we make collections. We ore not much of a prophet but we predict the following as the nomination of the Populist for the next presidential election. Pres. Mrs. Ellen Lease, of Kansas. Vice Prest. Gov. B. R. Tillman, of South Carolina. A Streig aadslgilflcut Utterance. The last issue of the Sumter Free man” centains one of the most vigo rous and .outspoken editorials that has ever appeared from Col. Dar- gan’s versatile pen, and which should reoieve the serious consideration of all good ^citizens. In speaking of Governor Tillman’s threat to have some of the cities and towns, of the Slate, pot under a^netropolitan police, wnioh 4s simply one responsible to the State and not to the town, the editoi of the Freeman does not hesi tate to say that if such a measure is ever atteqpied that it should be re sisted by force; taking the position that local felf government is an in herent of the Anglo Saxon race, and one that they should not, under any oircumstanoes surrender without at least a struggle for its maintainanoe. What gives this ut- teranoe greater emphasis is the fact that Ool. Dargan has always been a strong advocate for obedience to law, and has been very outspoken in his denunciation of those who have ta ken it upon themselves to punish crime. We hardly think it probable that Governor Tillman will attempt such an outrage as this, especially when he finds a strcng sentiment against submitting to it, for despite his threats and bluster he is palpably lacking in some of the true attributes of courage, being only brave when hacked by a supposed majority, and our object in calling attention to this editorial is to point out to Col. Dargan, and those who agree with him in his advocacy of measures that are essentially paternal, that this threat, on the part of the Goveernor, is but the legitimate outcome of the proprogatdon of political ideas that are in themselves subversive of the very principles of a Republican form of government, and which, if put in to effect, would make our boasted freedom a sham and a pretense. If our Constitution should ever be come contaminated with paternal en actments and its baleful poison be come a part of our social and politi cal life, then the Goddess of liberty will take her flight to some more congenial land, and onr country be subjected to that worst of all tyran nies, the irresponsible tyranny of the multitude. Paternalism and self government are so diametrically opposed to each other that it is impossible for them to be brought together, and the people or nation that needs a paternal form of government are no more fit to govern themselves than are the inhabitants of Russia, and need an absolute monarch like the Czar t o keep them from anarchy. Ool Dargan has been nnoonsoions- ly sowing the wind and he now hears the mutterings of the approaching whirlwind.
