satisfied with doing less. There is
no real cause, except general dis
trust, for the present stringency, and
all the talks about stay laws and sim
ilar mischievous devices simply
makes things worse than they
and makes the capitalist hold more
tenacionsly to his money, bo far as
the South is concerned we have

this and what is now needed more
than anything else is faith in our

disaster, however great it may t»e,
that cannot be met and overcome by
the same unshaking courage that has
enabled“our people to meet and over

which the present one is a matter of

Dr. J. William Stokes is writing a
series of articles on the present finan
cial situation, and seems to be en-
tirely obvious, of the fact that he
has, so far as hie ability and infln-
cnee went, done as much to bring on
the present financial stringency as
any man in the country. His advo-
oaey of the visionary and impracti
cable ideas embodied in the Ocala
platform is sufficient to. prove the
truth of onr assertion.
The financial condition is bad
enough now, but Dr. Stokes and
Others who advocate the financial
Vagaries of the Ocala demands are
simply making things worse than
they otherwise would be,
We beg to remind the editor of the
Sumter.Freeman that the famous
Dread Scott decision was a matter
of MW and not of sympathy. The
feelings or prejudice of the judge’s
having nothing whatever to. do with
a case that involved a grave consti
tutional question, It has long been
a wonder to us why it is that Col,
Dargan, who seems to have so. much
admiration for New England ideas,
did not make his residence in sight
Of the famous Plymouth Rocks and
dweU IttObg a people with whom he
is in sympathy. - He certainly will
find the surroundings more congen
ial than those that environ him in
fiottth Carolina and would find a
great deal lees to vex his ever troub
led eplrit.
