Opposition to special privileges is
! i > oae of the sheet anchors of the Al-
liance creed, yet the members of this
order,'cobtrary to the doctrines they
preach, are demanding very special
privileges for the silver mine owners
in trying to force the Government to
give their millions of dollars for
which they will render no equivalent

wrung from the farmers themselves.
In another article we cull atten
tion to an inexcusable piece of law

Lexington, aud since that was writ-
ton three colored men have met their
death at the hands of the same tri
bunal. It is true that the crime for
which these fiends suffered was one!
of the greatest jiossible enormity, |
and no punishment, no matter how j
severe, is teogreat for itt yet while all
this is trite, and m this case at least,
there Was no doubt as to the guilt of
these men, the punishment should
be inflicted by the bauds of the courts
and not by an infuriated, indignant
mob. The punishment, for crimes
of this character, ishonld be swift,
sure and terrible, but the moral and
detering effect of it would be far
greater were it meted out by the of
ficers of the law. If the action ef
the mob would vnly confine itself to
cases of this character, where- there
W4S not the slightest doubt as to the
guilt of the accused, it would not be
so bad, but unfortunately it docs
not stop here ani men are sometimes

sense to make a living would think
of casting Ids lot with a people who
have no respect either for themselvee,
the good nmne of t lie State or for
the majesty of the law. One of the
worst features of the whole business
is that so far as we can gut Iter, there
lias not been the least effort made by
any one to arrest these murderers
and bring them p, trial. While our
people are mangling over politics
and the Dispensary, these ruffians
who probably call themselves law
and order citizens, are getting in
their work aud doing all in their
power to make life and property in
crease in South Carolina. If those
who me charged with the execution
of the law do not make some effort
to bring these murderers to justice,
then they themselves must be consid
ered as being in spmpathy with those
who recognize no law save that of
violence, and whose residence in any
community is both a disgrace aud a
menace to the peace of the State. A
