It was in the latter part of April.
The air had just been refreshed by a
thunder-shower, and the last rays of
the sun, just disappearing Iwliind Vbe
distant hiounlains, were reflected by
the riiiu drops on the trees aud grass
like" ’so many diamonds; “J'lie iur
was balmy and grateful to tired hu-
mauity. The leaves, which in that
climate put fo’rtli early, were hearly
grown, clothing hill and dale in a
soft, delicate, green mantie, while
the honeysuckle, violet and dogwood
blossoms ladened the air with sweet
perfume. The suu had uow disap
peared, leaving a brilliant glow in
the western horizon, which gradually
faded away as the purple mist deep
ened on the distant mountains. ,
Suddenly my horse pricked up his
ears and listened attentively, and
soon I heard the clatter of horses’
hoofs coming up the road. It proved
to be my companions, who were very
tardy. Soon we were mounted and
cantering briskly toward the moun
tains.
Arriving at the foot of the moun
tains we dismounted, aud, leading
our horses to a sheltered spot some
distance from the road, we fettered
them securely and set out. A loud
blast from the horn resounded
through the mountain solitudes, the
hounds scattered out and the hunt
began.
After about half an hour of wait
ing the deep baying of a bound about
half a'mile from where we "Stood told
us that a cat hail been scented. The
other'llogs hurried to the spot, and
soou they were going full tilt ou the
trail. We had some pretty brisk
running and walking to keep within
hearing of the pack. The barking
of the bounds was to my sure the
finest music I bod ever heard, and
being 'a Stranger to the country and
snob sports, the effect on my feelings
was pleasant indeed/
- After about three hours of run
ning, walking, crawling, climbing and
falling over mountain crag, gorge aud
len, we heard all the dogs barking
rionsly, aud our leader, who was a
gigantic mountaineer of six feet two,
decided that they had bayed him.
But there was nearly a mile of the
roughest land ftnaginable between us
and our game. We stumbled ou
over rocks, logs, brush and gullies
until we Came to the tree up which
hie catehip had climbed.
One of the party had brought
along some torch-pine for the pur
pose of “shining his eyes.” This
was soon lighted, and after much
walking around the tree, craning of
necks aud straining of eyes, the red
glare of the torch was reflected by
two glaring balls in the top of the
tree, which looked like fire-balls.
“Here she air, boys’, Jlst look at ’er
ise,”
“Jes’ lemme bev half a chance
with this here old musket, an’ her
ize won’tshine uptharmuch longer,”
said our marksman.
Placing the gun-barrel on the
torchmairi shoulder, he took careful
aim by the torchlight and fired. The
shining eyes disappeared but the cat
did not fall. Boon We heard sonie-
thihg falling on the leaves, which
our hunters at once declared to be
blood, and so it proved )o be, for in
about five minutes our game tum
