We aro truly gltul that t!ic IStatt bonds' have all been placed, but re gret that a lower rate of interesi could not be obtained. We are 1101 sufficiently posted to express a very decided opinion, but think the Gov ernor did the best he could iindci th« circumstance s.J The chairman of the board oi railroad commissioners must be « wonderful worker if he can span time from his public duties to man age the oliiee of secretary of tin national alliance. Colonel Duiicm was tip to within a short while ago if ho does not still hold the place State agent of the alliance. As i mutUr of curiosity we would like ti know to which he gives the best por tion of his time, the State or the alliance. It h reported that i’resideut Cleve- laud hat stated that he would not appoint any of the newspaper fra* tensity to office under his sulmiuis- Indio;]. If this report be true, then ho has paid the editors a very high compliment, in that he places such a high estimate im their servicet that he thinks they cannot be epareu from their work. Of course tin newspapers are too modest to claim that they elected Mr, Cleveland, but it is pretty certain that he could not have been elected without their help, and this being the case it is very natural for him to think that the editors cun be of more service to him In their present position? than m government officials. Where is the mail, anyway, who would exchange the privilege of saying what he pleases for the uncertain tenure of a tafliUCttl office. a . Our brother editor, Mr. b. A. This mere statement so clearly demon strates the fact that the railroads liave been over-assessed that no argu ment is needed to prove the justice ymt etreugtii of their position. Even if it oouiu be shown that the roads were worth every dollar of the assess- uitut, they could still make good thvir claim of over-assessment, it It not a ijuestiou of politic* or the amount ot money the roads make o; Jo«e, but simply a matter of justice. Until they get justice they will lighi and no sensible man wii) blame them ftnii lias (he Press, Been Subsidized^ It ha-s become very much the fashion with politicians, and in some oases with the papers themselves, to lay the blame for most of the polical and social evils uiwlcr which wc suffer to what they are pleased to call a subsidized press, und speak of the good days of the past when news papers were independent and occupied i conspicuous place as the moulders >f public opinion. Thx statement, o utterly incapable of truth, has only gained credence by constant rrptition, md would need no denial but for the inforlunate fact that there are some papers that try always to be on the drong side, and are ready to endorse my measure, irrespective of its merits, just as soon as they are convinced of its popularity. These, however, are exceptions to the general rule, and (here has never been a time, in the whole history of the country, when die newspapers have been as bold and inceasing in denouncing political md social wrongs than at the present dine, and there is no man, it matters mt what may be bis wealth, official »r social position, but what stands in ivve of the all powerful influence of lie newspapers. It would be im- lossible for any officials to be more irmly entrenched in power than nas he corrupt Tweed Ring, of New fork, who openly boasted that they jonId not lie driven out of office as song as they had the counting of the .oles, but everyone is familiar with l.o result of their defiance, and what .vas the principal instrument of their lownfall. The Times, assisted by a •ood many of the other city papers, nude war upon the Ring, and despite Ii reals amt offers of immense bribes xepl up the fight until every one of he gang was in prison or a fugitive from justice. There are hundreds of papers in the country whose influence or silence no gold could purchase, and the number if these is Increasing und not dimin ishing as some of our political agita tors would have us to believe* (State- incuts of this character are made merely for political effect or perhaps the agitators who make them imagine that other people could be us easily ••ought a# themselves. The field for usefulness in journalism is being constantly widened, and sonic of the I best talent in the country is employed ! in this profession, and that too of men whose moral rectitude is above reproach.
