Stop That Hiccough. “Why don’t yon stop that hiccough- IngV” said c gentleman to a friend who for > omo moment;' had been subjected to the annoying convulsive movement of tho diaphragm. “I wish I could,” gasped the victim, “but it's no go. A follow tried to scare me—said my coat was on lire—knew it wasn’t—swallowed nine times nine swal lows of water—no go—feel like a washed out hand engine,” he ejaculated angrily, having told his woes in disjointed utter ances and between couglis. “Well, you are a chump,” remarked the first speaker. “Come with me.” And he lod his friend into an adjoining saloon. “No 1 , not here,” said the other; “people will surely think I’ve been driukiug.” But his protests wen? in vain. His friend led him to the and ordered a heaping spoonful of p.ovdered sugar. “Come,” he said, “swallow this all at once." Thu victim did so slowly, and found to his intense surprise and relief when tho operation was completed that tho hiccoughs had vanished. “Now,” remarked the first gentleman, “for teaching you that remedy I’ll take just one with you. It is not a part of tho process, hut it’s worth the pri^e, isn't it? As for the sugar, 1 have never known it to fail to cure even the most stubborn caso of hiccoughs.’’—New York Herald. London's Fatal Fogs. The fog that enshrouded the town from November, 1870, to the beginning of 1880 had serious results. The deaths from bronchitis increased to 831 per cent, above the average; those from Whooping cough to281 percent. Dur ing the fog of 1801-8 mortality increased almost as much. The particles prevent the perfect aeration of the blood, In terfering with the interdiffualon of gases In the lungs, they impede the oxi dation of the carbon, and in weak or ganisms they cauee a loss of vital heat that frequently ends in death. The ef fect of smoke fog ou Vegetables may he properly taken aa an index of its effect on uuimuls. Horticulturists in and around London tell us that whenever the fog appears buds drop and many flowers are de stroyed. Country horticulturists, on the other hand, say that the white fogs do hot injure even conservatory plants. The fogs of 180O, 18U1 and 1893 were un usually serious in their i fleets on flow ers and foliage. During recent years the blight caused by London fog extend ed to Maidstone, thirty miles away, It would seem, then, that the area of the smoke fog Is sixty miles in diameter,- National Review. the eiiatn Tlio iro&llnst detail U submitted to the (hull and is not decided except upon his authority.
