This is the statement: Marion nearly $100.00; Darlington 000.00. We hope the friend who requested the publication of Mr. John Gory Kraus’ speech, will now be satisfied as to The Hkkald’s disposition to be fair. It is about time for the town au thorities to have a general house- cleaning. A great deal of informa tion in this line can be obtained at our office. Exercises appropriate to “Chil dren’s Day” were conducted at Heb ron last Sunday. Messrs. J. E. Skinner and II. M. Smith, of Dar lington, attended. H. Kelley in the loss of their daughter, Blanche, whose death occurred on Saturday morning. She was just fifteen years old, and up to within a few days of her death was a perfect picture of health, and her unexpect ed end, as she was only sick a few days, was a great shock to her fam ily and friends. She possessed a gen tle, retiring disposition, was very af fectionate and unselfish, and very much loved by all who knew her. The intermeut took place at Wes ley Chapel and the services, conduct ed by Rev. S. J. Bethea, were very solemn and impressive and attended by a large number of friends and relatives. “The morning flower* display their sweets. And gay their silken leaves unfold. As careless of the noontide heats, As fearless of the evening cold. So blooms the human face divine. When youth Its pride of beauty shews: Fairer than spring the colors shine, And sweeter than the virgin rose. Or worn by slowly-rolling years. Or broke by steknesi in a day, The fading glory disappears, The short-Uved beauties die away. Let sickness blast, let death devour, If heaven must recompense our pains: Perish the grass, and fade the flower. If Arm the word of God remains.” PersuMl. Miss Carrie Pegues, of Cheraw, came down for the reception. Mrs. A. Nachman left this morn ing to visit friends in Manning. Miss Mary Harrell, of Lydia is spending a few days with friends in town. Mr. E It Cox leaves today for a three weeks visit to his home at Bel ton, Anderson County. Miss Helen Malloy, of Cheraw, who has been in town for the past week, returned home on Tuesday. Miss Florie Allen, of "Florence, came up on Thursday to attend the reception of the Darlington Club, Misses Carrie and Yi. Haynsworth, of Florence, spent Thursday in town and attended the reception that night. Mr. J. L. Parrott attended the District meeting of the I. O. G. T„ at I^ike City, last week and reports a pleasant trip. Misses Ora and Bettie Thomas and Miss Lillie Covington, of Laurinburg N. C., who have been spending sev eral weeks with Mrs. T. W. Nor men t, returned home Friday night. The ladies of Darlington Circuit will give an ice cream reception, at Oats, on Friday, June 17, commenc ing at 4 p. m. A cordial invita tion is extended to the public. Death ef Mrs. J. W. Biggs. Mrs. J. W. Biggs, who lived near the factory, died on Monday. She was a most excellent lady and de voted Christian. She leaves a hus band and several children who are bereft by the loss of a wife and mother. Her remains were taken to Rockingham, N. C., for interment. |MxtwtMeCme|ty. A Mr- Floyd, of Sjwrtanhorg, lias an advertisement in the “State” call ing for 500 pigeons to be used in a shooting match. There is a law against such brutal andjiseless sports, and the people of Spartanburg should see to it that Mr. Floyd does not have his shooting match, or if he does make it cost him dear. Bull und chicken fighting are both very inno cent amusements when compared with pigeon shooting. Even if there was no law on the subject, the moral sentiment of the community ought to be strong enough to put a stop to an exhibition of this character. If Mr. Floyd is so anxious to kill something, be can find remunerative employ ment by going to India and helping to exterminate tigers and venomous snakes. A. S, Barglan at Wtrk. There were several burglaries iu town on Friday night, and it will be well for everybody to be on the lookout for these midnight maraud ers. They captured Mr. Watson’s pants with about $16 in the pockets, by reaching through the wiudow. They made a light haul at Mr. Wit- cover’s and secured some small change that happened to be in his pocket. Someone entered the room, about 4 o’clock in the morning, oc cupied by the editor of The Hehald and his brother, Mr. C. R. Woods, but he made some noise that aroused Mr. Woods, aud nothing was secured. Where this room is located is an ex tremely dangerous place for a rogue to try his hand, as it is on the second floor and the adjoining rooms are also occupied by gentlemen who will not hesitate to make it very uncomfort able for anyone who visits them with evil intent There is no cine to tne burglars, but the police are on the lookout for them. The Darlington Clnb gave an ele gant reception on Thursday night, which was attended by a large num ber of invited guests. The handsomi Club Rooms were gracefully decor ated for the occasion, and the com mittee of arrangements deserve great credit for the admirable way with which everything was managed. The large Billiard Room was cleared for the dancers,- while (hose who did not dance occupied the parlor. About two hundred invitations were sent out and nearly everyone of them was accepted. Refreshments were served during the evening, in fact were to be had all the time, and it is needless to say the dining room was well pat ronized. It was after three o’clock when the last of the guests took their de parture with pleasant recollections of a most enjoyable evening. As we have before remarked, the Darling ton Club is entirely free from the objectionable features that subject similar organizations to well deserved criticism, and numbers among its members a good many of the best people in the town. ' The following were the committees for the Reception: EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Bright Williamson, W. F. Durgan, J. I). Haynsworth, E. R. Mclver, J. C. Willcox, J. L. Michic. CHAPERONS: Mrs. W. F. Dargan, Mrs. H. T. Thompson, Mrs. G. W. Dargan, Mrs. J. L. Michie, Mrs. S. A. Woods. floor managers: E. O. Woods, R. E. Janies. A Social Evfit. Probably the most beautiful Church wedding ever witnessed in Darlington occurred at the Presby terian Church, on Wednesday night, when Mr. C. W, Milling and Miss Annie Williamson were made one, The ceremony was perforined by the Rev. J. G. I>aw in the presence of a large number of the relatives and friends of the contracting parties, Thp front of tlie Church, under the skill ful hands of the ladies, was trans formed into a perfect Imwer of flow ers, and excited the admiration of everyone present. The crowd was large, but were seated without trouble, this arduous task being very skillfully done by the ushers, Messrs Willie. Montgom ery and Lawton Dargan. The bridal party entered the Church in the fob lowing order: Ushers, Messrs. Willie Montgomery and Lawton Dargan. Attendants: Miss Helen Malloy, blue dress, Bright Williamson: Miss Laura Law, pink, P. A. Willcox; Miss Emma Edwards, white, T. H. Spain; Miss Maggie Law, blue, C. S. Huggins; Miss Cutsie Spain, pink, Waddy Thompson; Miss Josephine McCall, white, Mclver Williamson; Miss Emma Williamson, blue, It. J. Woods; Miss Meta Williamson, pink, R. E. James; Miss Demmio Law, white, R. L. Dargan; Miss Nouic Wil liamson, blue, Claude Milling; maid of honor, pink, Miss Carrie Mont gomery; best man, C. R. Woods; her ald, Master Woods DarguiP, flower girls, Pat Woods, pink, Alice Durgan, blue; bride and groom. The bride was beaqtjfqlly dressed jq wlpte. The gentlemen were in full even ing dress. After the marriage the bridal party, and a largo number of friends, were given an ele gant reception at the residence of the bride’s farther, Mr. U E. Wil liamson. There were over a hundred guests and the reception was a pleas ant one in every respect. The bride was the recipient of a large number of beautiful presents. The fine music given during the evening added a great deal to the en joyment of those who are “moved by the concord of sweet sounds”. The vocal music was furnished by Miss Emma Erwards and Messrs C. D. Evans and R. E. James, of Darling ton, and Miss Helen Malloy, of Che raw. Miss Malloy fully sustained the reputation she made in Darling ton last Summer, when she charmed everybody by her sweet voice. It is extremely rare that one has the pleas ure o£ hearing such fine instrumental music as was rendered by Misses Lillie Covington and Bettie Thomas, two very accomplished musicians of Laurinburg N. C. Their playing was simply exquisite and it would be hard to speak too highly of it. At a late hour the guests depart ed, the ladies to count up their con quests, and the gentlemen to dream of starry eyes and the strains of dc- licous mutic. Soft starry eves looked love to mine, Tke Healthiest Sfi enEarth- Flae Mlieral Water—The hest Place to speat the Spring aid Sinner Months. Southern Pines, Moore Co., N. C., is situated on a high sand mountain, and there are several causes which go to make It the healthiest spot on and the very best place to sf lug the spring and summer Its elevation above the sun section for more than one bund: causes a delightful breeze at during the summer. Its location amid a vast forest of long leaf pines gives It an atmosphere which physicians of na tional reputation say is the most health ful to be found in the United .States. The soil being a pure white sand gives perfect drainage, and therefore no form of malaria can exist. The Mineral Springs nearby, issuing from asingular medical store house built bynatureand curiously situated in this sand moun tain seems as though the Creator in tended this spot as a place where man kind might rest and regain health. This place was first noted as a winter health resort, and thousands of persons from the Northen States have come to it during the past few years; and with out a single exception they have been beuelitted. During the past two summers it has been shown by actual test that those suffering from weakness of mind or body can find greater relief at this place than any other known resort. Dr. Wile, an eminent phy sician of Connecticut and editor or the “New England Medical Monthly,” has been investigating for the benefit of Northern phyicians, and he says South ern Pines isthe best known place for those who need rest and sleep. He says the first inclination ohe has is to sleep,.and that this rest, without the use of drugs, enables the natural forces of the body to impart strength to the diseased parts. Those suffering from indigestion, rheumatism nud all blood disorders, nervousness caused by over work or any other cause, find relief and health without taking medicine. Visit Southern Pines and stop at the SOUTHERN PINES HOUSE. Kates to board less than at the ma jority of summer resort hotels in the South; accommodations superior; every attention given. The most eminent nhysicians of Pennsylvania and New York constantly in attendance. The (test arragement for bathing in open air. Swimming, plunge, shower, hot water, and medicated baths.
