There has never been a man that
has been the recipient of more abuse
by bis enemies, and senseless praise
by his friends than Gov. Tillman, and
nothing shows the intensity of politi
cal prejudice more than this. We
are satisfied that some of our con
temporaries have gone too far in their
-criticisms, and the effect of such
harshness will be to his help instead
of injury. On the otl er hand the
inordinate praise of such papers as
the Abbeville Medium would disgust
any man blessed with a decent
amount of common sense, and it is
very probable that, were it in his
power, he would prefer shutting
down on the Medium, and all other
papers of the same character The
editor of the Medium has s : mply
shut his eyes and made up his mind
to praise everything the Governor
does, whether good or bad.
We copy from the News and Cou
rier two articles, on the political
situation, which we are sure will meet
the approbation of nearly every con
servative man in the State. One is
written by Col. J. H. Earle and the
other by one of onr own citizens,
Col. Mcfver, and nothing that either
of them have ever done reflects more
Credit upon their patriotism, than
the temjierate and conservative words
with which they express their views.
Even those who dill :r with them, as
regards the best method to pursue in
order to restore harmony to the party,
must admit the unselfishness and
sincerity with which they are ani
mated. South Carolina has not,
within her borders, two more devoted
or patriotic sons than Col’s Earle
and Mclver, and they are evidently
willing to make any sacrifice, save
that of principle, to restore peace

paper in the State that comes out
squarely in favor of Senator Hill as
the nominee of the Democratic party
for President- We are candid enough
to say that for once, at least, the
brilliant editor of our eontenqiorary

Hill would be one of the greatest
misfortunes that could liefall the
party. We very much fear that
Cleveland, as the trickery of Hill has
captured New York, cannot secure
the nomination, but in this event a
much better man than his rival can
be found. Mr. Hill belongs to a
class of politicians that the party
can well spare, and if he is nominated
