We have no hesitation in saying
that the passage of the free coinage
silver bill by Congress, will be a
very grave mist ike, in-as-niuch as it
will seriously derange the bnancial
affairs of the Nation, cause gold to
be withdrawn from circulation and
hurt everybody except the owners of
the silver mines, who of course will
be enriched by having about seventy-
live cents worth of silver stamped as
a dollar, and being paid out as such.
If the* large democratic majority in
Congress were capable of exercising a
little common sense by letting this
question alone, and devoting their at
tention to the Tariff. making it the
issue, and undoing some of the vi
cious legislation of the last Congress,
that statesman and patriot, Grover
Cleveland, would be the next occu
pant of the White House. One tiling
is very certain, and there is no use
in shutting our eyes to the fact, and
that is if this unwise and iniquitous
measure is carried, it wiH sound the
death knell of the Dcniocntic party
so far as tin* next presidential elec
tion is concerned, and for their .suc
cess the Republicans will have to
thank the dense stupidity and inex
cusable ignorance of some of the

of the present law, which makes
$12,500 the lowest amount, is an
outrage upon the business intelli
gence of the public.
There is at present J,(i9l national
banks, with $152,113,850 in bonds
deposited to secure circulation. This
recommendation would reduce their
deposits to 8i5,(!94,ftOO or a reduction
of $148,419,850. The banks in this
ease could dispose of these bonds,
and at present rate realize the snug
little sum of $20,715,5(12 as pre
miums. The monthly withdrawal of
$3,000,000 cuts no figure, as there
are other methods that could be
made use of. The interest, oil what
is called semi-annual duty, is now
one-half of 1 per cent payable on
the average circulation every six
months, this the Comptroller recom
mends shall be reduced to one-fourth
of I percent annually. Should these
recommendations be carried out. the
financial machine which has long
controlled the business of the coun
try would be continued on an ex
ceedingly cheap basis. By the de
posit of $3,094,000 in bonds with un
