Installation of Officers and Banquet
The following ofiieers were install
ed on Monday night at SI. Davids
Isalge.
W. E. James, W. M.; J. L. Michie,
S. W.; W. A. I’arrott, J. W.; R. K.
Dargan, Secretary.; II. Me Hodge,
Treasurer; H. L. Blount, S. D.; H.
Hcnnig, J. I).; Messrs. Yates and
Kirby, Stewards.
The anniversary of St.John, the
Evangelist, December 27th, occur
ring on Sunday, the banquet was
held on Monday. (Jeneral James
gave a very interesting sketch of
Masonry from its earliest history to
the present lime. (J. W. Brown. Esq.,
made an eloquent speech in response
to the toast “South Carolina.” These
were the only regular addresses,
but impromptu speeches were made
by Mr. John Irwin of New York, Mr.
A. McT Hamby, of (Jeorgetown, and
F. Nor-
interest to pay his store a visit.
One day last week, sixty-six bales
of cotton averaging 50(> lbs. each,
were passed through the Compress,
and tile whole of it was put into one
car, making the load 33000 lbs.
When it is remembered that the
average number of bales, not com
pressed, that can be put into a car is
from twenty to twenty-tive, it can be
readily seen what a great saving
there is in space. If the sixty-six
bales had been put into three cars,
there would have been about forty
or tifty thousand more pounds for
the locomotive to pull just two extra
cars.
One of the present season’s suc
cesses, and one that has won for it
self a prominent place in the fore
most rank of the popular farce-
comedies of the day, will be present
ed at the Opera Hbuse on Saturday
evening January tlth, under the odd
sounding title “A Sociable Session.”
Those who are acquainted with Social
Sessioqs will at once understand that
agood time is in contemplation, and
the eminence of the cast who have
been entrusted with the presentation
of this captivating comedy, allows noj
room for doubt as *o the success that
will attend their efforts when corn-
script to the paper and this will ex
plain why his speech was not pub
lished:
The president then announced the
third regular toast: “Our Country,
America, it is but another word for
opportunity," and called upon Mr.
(Jeorge W. Brown, of the Darlington
Bar, to respond. Mr. Brown is a
graceful and eloquent speaker, he , , .i
held the interest and attention of the
company from the beginning to the
close of his remarks.
