and Captain Rtsilly’.s me » arc trying to run
her down. There is m ich an overflowing
supply of cats in l!ie Tenderloin that the
woman’s eccentricity whs looked upon
with equanimity by the residents until.a
valuable Angora fell prey t-o her poisoned
meat. Then the cal owners went around
to the Thirtieth street, si.ilion and besought
the captain to stop the slaughter.
The woman is described as a well dressed
matron of about forty. She goes about
after midnight st. alt liily with a basket on
her arm. She keeps i,he poisoned meat in
her basket. She wanders along the streets
in aearck of the cats, calls them to her, and
after pelting them gives them a bit of thv
poisoned food. It kills t Iicmii quickly. She
does all her work generally between 1 and
\ in the morning.
Some newsboys saw her poison the An
gora. It was owned by James Cassidy, ol
West Twenty-fourth street. It was a
household pet and lie valued it highly. The
newsboys chased the cat poisoner down to |
Eighth avenue, when she disappeared^n a
house. Mr. Cassidy and the boys found
the basket hidden under a stoop in Twen
ty-fourth street. There were six murdered
tabbies in the basket.
They took the basket around to the sta |
tion house mid opened it on the desk be ;
fore Sergeant Sheldon The policeman j
was surprised.
“We’ve had some queer people in this
precinct,” iu* said, “but this beats any
thing yet.”
The policemen have been ordered to ar
rest the cat poisoner on sight. They
haven’t seen her since, though, and they
think that the chase after her may have
frightened her out of her whim for a time.
