Cyclones and Tornadoes.’
Cyclones ami tornadoes are both
wind storms, with more or less rain;
and they both whirl; otherwise they
are very unlike. The cyclone is from
200 to 1,500 miles across, is general
ly born at sea, does most of its work
there, and lasts several days—some
times even weeks—before dying out.
Its extent is so great that it takes
many hours, and often a day or two,
to pass a given point; and, though
there is a gradual change of direc- j They also have perfect confidence in
tion, the wind blows apparently as a i trading here as they know there is
straight-line gale. The tornado is a! only one price for all. My line in

the gyratory velocity. In a cyclone,
the latter is 100 miles an hour some

To call it ft “cyblone” is to belittle lie that lie has bought out the
its terrors. True cyclones are ex
ceedingly scarce, while tornadoes are,
numbered by the hundred every sea
son. Cyclones are of tropical origin, I
and are chiefly found iu five locali-,
ties: the West Indies, Bengal Bay!
and the Chinese coast, North of the;
equator; aud in the South Indian i
Ocean, off Madagascar, and the South i
Pacific, near Samoa. In the Aritil-!
les thca° are not half a dozen, on the
average, every season. They usually |
come only between July and October.
For the term “cyclone,” then, the
news:gatherer has but little legiti
mate use. ‘.‘Hutt cane” is the old '
Spanish name for a West India cy-.
clone; but it is now used, also, to
designate a long-eoiitiuued wind of
extreme violence. In Beaufort’s Philadelphia raised Onion Sets,
scale one rises through “light,” “gen-1
tie,” “fresc,” and “strong” breezes,
“'.esh, “strong,” aud “whole” gales,!
