T! DMIIMH HERALD w. a woods, T. J. DREW. EDITORS * AND PROPRIETORS. DARLINGTON, S. C. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1891. Darlington Cotton Market. Strict Ix)W Middling Middling ’ i '> Strict Middling Low Middling ” Nov. 4th, 1891. A. B. Stuckey, Es(i., of the Sumter bar, is in town. Mr. C. W. Davis, of Laurenburg, gjK-nt yesterday in town Don’t fail to read the new adver tisement of McCall & Burch in this issue. They deserve your patronage, Don’t forget the State Fair next week and be sure to attend. A great many new features will be added to make it attractive. “A Perfect Foundation,” Isa. 5J8: 16^1 Cor. 3:11, will be the subject for disenssion at the Y. M. C. A. meeting on Sunday afternoon. The regular monthly business meeting of the Y. M. 0. A. will be held in their Hall, in the Hewitt building, tonight. The meeting on Sunday afternoon will also be held in the Hull. The Euphradian Society of the S. C. College has elected the follow- ing young men from Darlington among its officers: A. M. Coker, presi dent; W. C. Coker, treasurer; E. C. Bacot, literary critic. On Mjonday night, while the mem bers of the colored Baptist church* were preparing for a Bible reading to be given on Sunday, some mis creant threw a brick with such force against the window that it broke both blind and sash. If the jicrpetrator of the outrage can be discovered, the Mayor will give him his just deserts. Acts of this kind deserve the severest punishments, and the proper place for the person who commits them is the penitentiary. Our indefatigable friend, Kinard, of Columbia, makes a new announce ment in this issue of The Herald, and tells people where they can be suited in the way of clothing and everything else in his line. Of c mrse everybody who goes to the Fair will want a new suit, and the man who can’t get a lit in his es tablishment is certainly a freak of nature. All you have to do is just to tell him how much you can afford to give fur a suit, and leave the mat ter to him, feeling assured that he will give you something that will make you look your best, (live him a cull. Duncan Clark’s Female Minstrels appeared at the Grand lust evening to a very good audience. The per- tance can, if it were necessary, be! whiskey are the potent factors that easily secured. From ’ personal ob-!are instrumental in the commis- servation we do not hesitate to say that the Fair, from its very incep tion, h;es been admirably managed, and we do not think that the direc tors have ever done anything that could subject them to any criticism. If mistakes of judgement, on the part of committees, have been made, it is no fault of the officials as the colli sion of so many murders, and the remarks concerning ’ the carrying of pistols, will apply with equal force to the traffic in whiskey. It is sim ply idle to attempt to place the responsibility on the Legislature, and “to try and force it into the enactment of a prohibition law. The people themselves are ’•esponsible | Correspondence. I’wpleean’t be made virtuous tors of this kind is a iiuancial one, mid judged by this standard, the directors have every reason to con gratulate themselves on their ad mirable management. These an nual exhibitions have unquestionably accomplished a great deal of good, and the people at large, who reap the benefits of them, should see to it that they are sustained. It would be a lasting reproach to the rich county of Darlington to allow the Fair to languish for lack of support and even from a business stand point they ought to sustain it for the benefits that acme. The social feature should also be considered on account of the opportunity afforded for seeing friends who, but for this formance is a good one, and no | opportunity, we would rarely meet doubt will be largely attended this evening.—Daily liegister, Des Moines, la., April 24, 1891. The celebrated Duncan Clark’s Female Minstrel entertainment oe- We do not wish to imply by any means that the Fair was a failure, because the fact is that in some de partments it was very fine, notably Dr. Baird has broken up in Dar lington and will return to his former home in Louisiana. At present his family is at Society Hill. The Dr. and his wife both made a good many friends in Darlington who very much regret their departure. Mr. J. J. M*ard had the misfor tune to lose his barn and stal les on Thursday by fire. The place is just a few miles from town on the Tim- monsville road. The origin of the fire is unknown. There was no in surance, and the loss was about one thousand dollars. In the notice of the performances of the Elfin Star Comedy Company, which appears in another column, we neglected to state that Mr. Bourne, the manager, always takes a prominent part on the stage, and is, as is also his wife, Dorothy Ross, a most excellent actor, and with his roug company^ is always sure to please his audiences. The balloon ascension at the Fair was a complete success, and everybody was well pleased with the sight. Miss Bates who made the as cension has been at the business for eleven years and has never met with an accident. As we are not posted on aerial navigation, we don’t know how high she ascended, but the bal loon looked very small when she dropped loose from it. The following ytmng ladies were in town last week: Miss Helen Malloy, of Cheraw, with Miss Annie Williamson; Miss cupied the boards at Heim’s Opera] the display of horses and poultry, Hall last night. ’J he hall was well j but simply to call attention to the filled, many coming for ten miles to; fiict of there bdl , a geiimil laok of see tl e snow. When The Herald went to press last week, the Court was engaged in trying the case of Solomon Morris j urged with obstructing the C., S. & N. R. R. He was found guilty and sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. George Pearce was tried for carry ing concealed weapons and assault and battery with intent to kill. He was acquitted. He was represented by Boyd & Brown. This case was finished on Thursday morning, and the Court then adjourned for the Fair. On Friday morning the case x>i John Floyd for the killing of Calvin Rhodes was taken up. LateSatnr-j day night the jury brought in a verdict of manslaughter with a re-j commendation to the mercy of they Court. He was sentenced to hard labor in the penitentiary for ten years. A motion for a new trial by his counsels Boyd &. Brown, was de-, nied. It is probable that an appeal will be taken in this case. Marion Hart plead guilty to as sault with intent to kill and was; fined $100. Dandy Johnson was convicted of j house breaking and larceny and was sentenced to the penitentiary for five years. Solomon Newman who plead guilty to stealing grain from '•he field was fined fifty dollars, which was promptly paid. J. Dozier Flinn was admitted to bail in the sum of $3,000 charged with the killing of Samuel Kelly. Henry Hicks indicted for abduc tion was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fine of $250 or serve five years in the penitentiary, lit w represented by Ward & Woods. The parries who took the advan tage of the excursion rates to visit Charleston last week, from this com- mun’ty, were well pleased with their trip. Petit ion.- 1 to the Semite ami Home of Representatives, praying them to abolish the traffic of intoxicating beverages, by enacting a prohibition law, is getting signatures very rapid ly in 1 .ake Swamp church and com munity. Some men who call them selves good men, professing Chris tians, an-1 advocating purity in the church, say excommunicate members who traffic in wine or cider, but they won’t sign a petition calling for the abollition of intoxicating beverages in the State. Why is this? The farmers will soon be through harvesting the crop. Most of them have commenced sowing small grain —a very important thing for us all to do. Cypress News. A good many of our people speak of attending the State Fair next week. One niglit last week the large mill sheds of Dr. J. M. Josey caught on fire and was getting a rapid start when discovered. The fire was ex- tenguished before any damage was done. The cotton fields' begin to look black again, and a good many of our farmers are sowing oats. Very few of our people went to Charleston last week. Lynch’s River is reported to le very low. A petition is being circulated in this section asking the next sitting of the Legislature to pass a law pro hibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors in this State. Several of our farmers were drawn as jurors for the lirst and second weeks of court. It seems that the Cypress men are very lucky when it comes to being drawn as jurors. We have beef and lisli at this place every Saturday. Among our sick are Mrs. L. S. Pate aud a daughter of Air. A. B. Du Bose. Other Local matter on 2nd Page. UEI’OKT OF THE GRAND JURY.
