Hot Shot for Ur. Stokes.

On Senator Butlers return to
Kdgetield, on August 26, from at

I he Senate your correspondent hand
ed him a copy of the Cotton Plant of
the 8th instant containing Ur.
Stokes's edit ora I criticism of his
Prosperity speech, and also the Cot
ton Plant of the 5th with the resolu
tions of the Snell's Alliance, and in
quired if he desired to say anything
in connection therewith.
•After reading Ixdh Senator Butler
said in reply:
“1 have lived to very little purpose
for something more than half a cen
tury in South Carolina if it is neoes
sary for me to vindicate myself against
such disgraceful falsehoods as those
contained in tVeso two papers. I had
never met Dr. Stokes until the Pros
perity meeting. He appeared to be
a well-mannered, fair man, and
treated him as such, but this per
formance of Ms shows clearly that
he is devoid of principles and
honorabloquiilitirs. He knows fully
well that 1 did not utter the senti
ments he attributed to me. or any
thing approaching them. He hoard
,V5 . every word of my speech and had a
mm hqur to reply to it. Why did .
'p-there in my presence i

mute and permit the fur- j

i v s ct^ivict him either of self-stultifiea-
fk>n or, what is worse, wilful false-
llCMld.
“1 never uttered such sentiments
or anything approaching them, and
I »r. Stokes knows it.
‘•As to the Snell Alliance resolu
tions I have nothing to say, further
than that they do me gross injustice.
They bear the ear marks of Dr.
Stokes, and, of course, are predicated
upon the false information he dc-
liherately palmed off on the members
of this Alliance. It is pitiable to
see a man, who claims to lie iutelli-
genct, guilty of such disgraceful
mothods to carry a jxiint, hut he shall
not practice them tijsm me if I can
reach the ears of tin- people he is
seeking to influence ami jvi/son against
’me by falsehood and misrejueseiita-
tion. If there is anything the people
of this State detest and despise it is a
sneak and a liar."
Senator Butler will he at Bates-
btirg on the 9th of next month, the
days of the public discussion at that
place, and will l*e jjj.yJ to meet Dr.
Stokes and repel his ace u sat inns face
