found for diseases of the blood is
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, and most diseases
originate from impure blood.

Mr. J. I). Shaw, editor of the
Bishopvillc Eagle, was killed at a
picnic, on Saturday, by a drunken
rough named Hosier Kelly. Mr.
Kobert Baskins was dangerously cut
by Kelly’s brother. The Kellys were
disturbing the party and Shaw and
Buskins were trying to induce them
tg leave. It was a very deplorable
occurence, and stern justice should
be meted out to the murderer, but
we presume he will plead, as is usual,
self defense or insanity. The num
ber of murders committed lit our
State is simply appalling, and there
wrll.be no improvement in this di
rection until carrying concealed
weapons and whiskey drinking are
made, just what they are in fact,
disreputable by public opinion. The
drunken ruffain receives, on all sides,
too much consideration.
Meeting of the County Alliance at
Lamar.
According to previous i.nnonnce-

Friday the 3rd, and them*eting was
ery much enjoyed by tho; e present.
Ex-Congressman Hiehardsi n and Mr.
II. C. Burn made addresses which
were warmly received by a majority of
the members present. Mr. J. J.
Waddell, of Society Hill vas elected
delegate to the State Alii; nee which
meets in Spartanburg on the 20th of
this month. Mr. Waddell is an ar
dent advocate of the Sul -Treasury.
Mr. E. M. Williamson, a very conser
vative gentleman, and a first class
farmer was elected Presi lent. It is
almost needless to say th it the good
folks of Lamar had a spiel .did dinner
for the Alliance; and everybody else
who attended. The edi -or of The
Hekald would certainly 1 ave been on
hand but for a previous promise to
attend the 4th of July celebration at
Che raw. We will be on hand next
time without fail.

The Fourth of July alfhemv.
The celebration of litis day at
Cheraw was in every worthy of the oc
casion, and of the reputut’on of this
patriotic and historic old town. The
duty of observing the day was not de
legated to just a few people, but was
participated in by the whole town and
surrounding Country. The stores
were all closed and the day converted
into a general holliday, and it is
needless to say that the exercises were
of great interest and reflected credit
on the taste and management of the
committee of arrangements.
Quite a large party went from 1 >ar-
lington, the most important part of
the crowd being the Guards, who
went to help celebrate t'ledayaud to
compete for a prize that was offered
for the best drilled company.
The train reached Gherawabont i
half past ten, and all repaired to the
vicinity of the town hall where the
exercises were to he held. After
short rest, the military, the Darling
ton Guards and the Cheraw Guards,
were marched to the Academy Green
where the eompetilivedrill was to
held. It was a matter of very great
regret that only two e mijmnies had
entered forth'* drill as it would have
added very much to t he interest of the
occasion to have had the whole regi
ment pn’sent. Maj. Thomas, of the
Citadel, who had kindly promised to
act as judge, w as on hand, and in a
few minutes he commerced by having
the Cheraw Guards put through
series of evolutions, both in marchin 6
and the manual of arias. When In-
had finished with tiiis command, tin
Darlington Guards were caried
through the same ordeal. It did not
take Maj. -Thomas 1 mg to make up
his score, when it was found that the
Darlington Guards was the better
drilled of the too eoii'inands. Tin
prize, fifty dollars in gold, was then
handed to Capt. Thompson, who
after repeated calls, made a ven
graceful little speech. After this pari
of the Programme was finished tin-
crowd assembled at the Town Hall to
hear the address. The meeting w-
very gracefully presided over by Che-
raws most popular citizen, Dr. Kol-
lock, aman whose professional skill,
literary culture and social qualifies
would make him an honor • to any
community.
The exercises were opened with
prayer by the Rev. Mr. Hutson, pastor
of the Presbyterian church; after
which the well known time “Ameri
can” wits sang by a choir that prac
ticed for the occasion, and it is almost
needless to say that the singing was
good. Tint chairman then introduced
Mr. Donald Matheson who in a clc.ir
and well modulated voice read the
Declaration of Independence after
which "the the regular oration was
delivered hy Mr. L. E. Caston. The
address showed careful pre)ieratiou,
and the speaker very clearly deinon-
ouslruted why South Carolina should
ever honor this memorable dav. He
was applauded several times during
his address, and it was very evident
that the audience wvte in thorough
sympathy with his patriotic remarks.
Maj. I hoinas was called on and
made a short address; at the conclu
sion of which the choir sang a beau
tiful selection. The meeting was
dismissed with the benediction by
Rev. Mr. Hutson.
A bountiful dinner was served to
all who wished to partake of it.
There was a gane of Base Ball in the
afternoon in which tho Darlington
su'icumlied to Cheraw; it may not be
amiss to say that Maj. Thomas com
plimented the Darlington Guards
very much on their drilling, and
c-onimeiidulion from such a source is
wonrth something. The Guards
were very sorry that the whole Regi
ment was not there to compete for
the prize. The Her aed w ill backe
the Guards against any company in
the Regiment, and it is very probable
that they will ail have a chance to
show their metal at the Full Fair:
that is if the ofheiuls can Ik- induced
to offer a prise. Capt. Thompson is
a splendid drill officer, and in addi
tion to this the Company is composed
of splendid materul.
One of the best features of (he day
was the presentation of a beautiful
silk flag to the Cheraw Guards, by
' ('apt. K. B. Matt boson, whoacted as
spokesman for the ladies, and made
a very appropriate address, w hich was
feelingly responded to by Capt. Por
ter. Gen. James was in command of
the military with Capt. T. F. Malloy
as Chief Marshall. The survivors
paraded and were led by Sheriff King
