vigorous article taking the News &
'Courier to task for claiming the cx-
■ tension of the ('. S. & N. railroad as
:4t Charfe#Uat enterprise, and very
clearly demonstrates the fact that
JJarlington and Hennettsville were
instrumental in having the road ex
tended. The News is a very pcaca-
l<le journal, hut any reflection on thej
enterprise of Darlington, or any at
tempt to deprive her of due credit
for what she does, can always be

then he ought to want as large an
audience us possible to witness hi.-
trinmph. The Governors worst en
emy has never licensed him of a lack
of courage and. whatever, else may
may be said of him, he is not the man
to w ithdraw from the controvcrsary,
and if there is any backing down it
w ill be on the part of Mr. Terrell.
The general public are not posted
as to the real merits or defects of this
bill, and they want, justwhat Mr. Ter
rell ought to gladly accord them, light
on the subject: and tho only way in
w liich they can get it is by a free open
discussion, and not by tlie presentation
on only one side of the case. 1 rrespcc-

discussion is held in secret, it will, a-

pression that its advocates are afraidto

rell refuses to moot the Governor in

single other man in the Penitentiary

the punishment must be in propor
tion to the crime. It has been as
serted that Jones, as he is an Edge-!
field man, would be favored, but it
is manifestly unjust to Mr. Talbert
to make this accusation until it is
clearly shown that he is guilty of
this favoritism. The superintendent
lias tried very hard, and that too
without success, to prove that the
eonviets at Sumter were not allowed
to go hungry; and it would he a wise
thing to avoid a controversy in re
gard to Jones. Let him not show
