THE FREE PASS BUSINESS.
Senators and Representatives arc
allowed mileage from their respective
loonies to Washington, when they go
fo attend the sessions of the Senate
,md Congress, but Mr. jLrby isthirfty
.enough to get a free pass, and so of
^course can pocket the amount allowed
hv law for his traveling expenses.
-What service will Mr. Irby render
rhe railroads in return for this
^orutesy?
BETTER |.ET HIM ALONE.
There seems to be a disposition,
^n some quarters, to read Cov. Till-
inan out of tije Alliance on account
,of his opposition to *hc suh-treasiiry
but it isgojng to be a pretty trouble
some job to whoever jmdertakes it,
for he is, unqueslionahly, the ablest
^naiq intellectu'illy, that the organi
zation ha* ii> tl;e State; and in addi
tion to this he isa quick and able deba
ter, and will make things pretty warm
for the man wl;o attacks him. We
predict dial by the time he finishes up
-Tei rell, his enemies in the order will,
^consider prudence the better part
,p£ falflif.
OFFICE SEEKING. «
If Senator Mettze, of Lexington,
had had any sense of dignity or self
I'esueet, ho would never have issued
a circular letter advocating his
..claims and fitness for the most im-
iHirtaut judicial office in the State.
It is without parallel in the history
of the State, so far as we know, and
the mere fact of hiselectionering for
the place shows his peculiar unfit
ness for the high office to which lit
he aspires. Under ordinary circum
stances, these would not he the least
.chance of his election, but we art
living in the midst of strange times,
in a political sense, and the Lcgis
latuve may see tit to gratify his am
bition by giving him this reward for
ids political service, but it will be a
great reproach to the State if such
an unblushing politician should
wear the juaicial pmiinc.
THE UOFERIVOR’S FREE PASS.
Whatever may have been Mr.
/-Tillman's motive in accepting a pas;
over the Richmond and Danville
q-adfoad, 4 is ygj.y certain that In
lias made a mistake, and one that
his political enemies, and some o:
his Alliance friends will not be slov
to avail themselves of. After de
nouneing, during the recent cam
paign, the State officials for accept
ing free passes, it was, to say the least,
extremely inconsistent for him to ac-
■ eept one himself. He ouglit to have
.known that his administration
would meet with a very large share
of criticism, and it would have been
more in accord with wisdom to have
avoided giving his enemies such
chance as this. It would hardly be
fair to say that he was actuated by
impure meetives in accepting this pass
but it was neet jinl jcious, and he wa;
very un.yist* t<i subject himself to the
charge of being influeuceel by the
railroad corporations. He simple
puts himself under obligations wide:!
a public official should never assume 1
CHANGED FRONT.
Tile World, which during the late
.campaign was the organ eef <iov
.Tillman and his adherents, ha
changed front aiid is now pretty
vigorous in its criticism of the pres 1
.put administration. The outcome ot
the change is a movement to establish
an organ that can ho depended oi
je> support all the measures of those
who neiw control the State (iovern
incut. Of cqurae thee gentleman in
jerested in this scheme have both
the ability and means to establish
an organ, and keep it alive, but, it is
extremely questionable if it can ever
Jk* made a paying enterprise, and it
js very probable that its backers
would quarrel among themselves as
to what policy it sliquhl pursue.
The Governor would to a considera
ble extent dictate its policy, and this
Would, of course, mean lighting the
Sub-Ti'ea§(iry. It could not bc.ex
jx'cted that Talbert and Stokes and
the supporters of this scheme would
jpuport it, and this would, of course.
pp.C leave it a very large constituency

js pretty well occupied so far as daily
papers are concerned.
CHARLESTON BRANCHING OFT
Under the above heading the New
and Gouricr has something to say in
regard to the completion of the C,
S. & N. railroad, and also, states that
solid trains will he run between
Charleston and Fayetteville. Of
pourse the completion of this road
will 1* a good thing for Charleston,
but we fail to see w here the Iminch-
s ing out comes in on the part of that
city, as it w as with the utmost diff
iculty that Charleston could he in
duced rb?- ?mp.U umw.nt
of seven thousand dollars to put
, itself in dkect eommunicajiyu with
the •ich find prosperous county of
Marlboj-jaJgh.
TheJAall town of Be||ettsvilje
gave fl^een thousand dojlurs, and
Darlington about eighty thousand
dollars to have the road extended
fi-pra Sumter, .to.. Reuucttsville.
Charleston has now a fine opportu
nity to extend her trade, but if she
does not make some effort to get it,
some other enterprising city will get
ahead of her.
We jyant Charleston to prosper,
but the trouble is they won’t adver
tise themselves* it being very proba
ble that her business ujen spend less
money in this way than those of any
other city of equal size.
