The ceiling in Mr. Beck’s store is
a beautiful piece of work, and re-

was a pity to spoil it with a coat of

We have never seen a large crowd
seated with so little noise and confu

the hard work and admirable man
agement of Messrs. Lide, McFall and
Parrott, whose tact and patience as
ushers was commendable in the
highest degree. The members of the
choir also deserve thanks for their
prompt and regular attendance, but
more especially is praise due to the
two young ladies who alternated with
each other in presiding at the organ.
The work was not only hard but in

There will be a competitive drill in

An Amusing Runaway.
On last Thursday there was a run

the baggage wagon, and the omnibus,
the latter not at fault, all took a

INTRODUCTORY.
-:o:-
Mr. C. S. Nettles has bought Capt
Blackwell’s fine two year old colt.
This is one of the finest colts ever
raised in this section, and of course
must have brought a fancy price. If
more attention were paid to stock
raising we would save a great deal of
money that now goes to the west.
Mr. McCollough had the misfor-
tune to lose one of his tobacco barns
,pn Sunday. T,he fire originated from
a spark, and, could huge been easily
subdued, butdtte fowls Tor no cause,
became demoralized, and Iqft the
building to its fate. The loss was
about five hundred dollors, and there
.was no insurance.
- We are requested to state that a
special train will be run by the C. S.
& N. R, R. from Montclair, for the
accommodation of those who wish to
attend the meeting of the county
.Alliance on the third of July at La
mar. Schedule given in our next
issue.
Nearly all the young folks who
have been off at college have returned,
and with the ones who did not go
will manage to keep social matters
stirring. Those who are fond of
dancing will all go over to Sumter
at an early day to attend a ball to be
given by the cotillion club of place.
^
William A Caraway, a young white
man, attempted to commit suicide,
pn Friday last, by firing a bullet into
his head. He had just gone into a
small restaurant to get breakfast, and
shot himself while the meal was be
ing prepared. He will probably live
but it is very probable that he will
pever recover mentally.
Tomato plants are being seriously
damaged by tlie ravages of a large
green worm, some of them being
(Several inches long. Mr. Lucas, who
manages the farming operations of
the conning company, has to keep
several hands at work destroying
them. So far as we know the okra
plant has always been proof against
insects.
Good Looks.
Good looks are more than skin
deep, depending upon .a healthy con
dition of all the vital organs. If the
liver be inactive, you have a bilious
look, if yyur stomach be discorded
you have a dyspeptic look and if your
and t kidneys be affected you have a pinch
ed look. Secure good health and you
will have good looks. Electric Bit
ters is the great alterative and Tonic
acts directly on these vital organs.

This neighborhood has just been
bereaved, and the church and coun
try suffered loss by the death yester
day morning (June 10th) of our
brother, D. G. DuDose. He was a
steward and also the superintendent
of our Sunday school here—residing,
however, a few miles South-of the
village. His health hed been not at
all good for at least two or three
months, and when about twelve days
ago he was violently attacked with
dysentery there were grave apprehen
sions of the result—expressed by
himself and doubtless felt by bis
physician. His age was a little over
fifty. He was universally esteemed,
without any known exception, as one
of the best of men—a Christian gen
tleman, useful citizen, faithful friend;
and in his family he was a very mo
del of the loving, sweet-spirited, even-
tempered, prayerful husband and
father.—A. J. Lester, in Christian
Advocate.
Mr. DuBose was well known
throughout this county, and was
universally esteemed for his many
noble qualities. He was a former
resident of the Cypress neighborhood
but had recently moved to Carters-
ville where he resided at the time of
ids death. He was one of the best
soldiers that Darlington county sent
to the war.
