Don’t forget the entertainment at
the Opera House on Thursday night
for the benefit of the Darlington
Guards. The object >s a worthy one,
and besides this the programme is a
good one.
The street lamps are all fitted with
shades and reflectors, and the light
is very brilliant. If they are kept
up to the present standard, they will
more than meet the expectations of
the public.
The town authorities have exten

One of the livliest and noisiest

Mamma (to her little boy). ‘-Now,
Bennie, if you ’ll lie good and go to
sleep, mamma ’ll give you one of Dr.

Bennie, smiling swelly, dropped off

There was a game of base ball at
the park on Saturday afternoon be
tween Palmetto and Lydia, in which
the former prevailed with a tx-ore of
nineteen to six. We will be always
glad to make announcements for the
different clubs, and hojie that the
season will be a lively one.
Not many physicians make great
therapeutic discoveries. For the most
part thejr content themselves with
administering judiciously what is
prescribed in the books. To Dr. J.
C. Ayer, however, is due the credit
of discovering that greatest of blood-
purifiers—Ayer's Sarsaparilla. *

The first popular excursion to
Darlington over the C. S. & N. 11.11.
took place on last Thursday. A large
crowd went and as Darlington was
then visited for the first time by a
good many of the party, they enjoy
ed the trip hugely, ’rice proceeds
will be added to the “Pipe Organ
Fund” of the Methodist Church.—

A Fine Farm.
On Tuesday the •editor had the
pleasure of riding over Mr. McCul
lough’s farm across the crock, and of
inspecting his fine tobacco crop, of
which he has about twenty five acres
all in splendid order. Besides the
tobacco he has thirty acres in okra
and in topiatos, the vegetables being
planted for the Canning Co. Mr.
McCullough’s oats ,on the Florence
road have just been cut and they are
the finest .ever grown in the vicinity
of the town.
The ttiuMter Excursion.
A considerable number of people
came over on an excursion train from
Sumter, on Thursday, and spent the
day visiting friends and seeing the
sights of the town. The excursion
was given by the ladies of the Sum
ter Methodist Church, and a good
sum of money was made by the trip.
The money will he used to assist in
the purchase of a fine pipe organ for
the church. This is the second in
stallment of our Sumter friends who
have honored ns by a visit, and we
extend a cordial invitation to them
to come again.
A Serious Loss to a P«>or Man.
Mr. John Hunter, who lives a few
miles from town, had the misfortune
to lose his horse a few days ago, and
is unable to replace the animal with
out some help from the public. Mr.
Hunter was a very gallant soldier,
and is partially disabled by a wound
received during the war. We build
monuments for the dead soldiers, and
this is nothing hut right; hut we
should tot he unmindful of the living
ones, and when they need help it
ought to he cheerfully extended.
Can’t th(^ ladies, who are ever fore
most in good works, do something in

Sound Idvice to Young Men.
“Every young man who earns
wages ought to buy a lot and make a
start of a home. The way to make
a start is to save a little money each
month and make a payment on your
purchase, and so, little by little, pay
for a lot and build your house. Don’t
spend all your money on livery turn
outs and dances and ice cream to
please your best girl. After a while
you will need a home for that best
girl, and the youngsters that some
way or another generally come around
and want to “put up” with you. Put
a little of jour spare cash into the
ground as you go along, and after

Death of Mrs. McCow u.
We regret to announce the death
of Mrs. Sal lie Kennedy McCown,
wife of G. J. McCown of this place,
which occurred on Sunday afternoon
at half past two o’clock. She was
horn in Alabama on the 17th of
February 1861, and was married the
28th of February 1883. She had
only lived in town for a few years
but had made a large number of
friends, and her loss will he deeply
felt by all who knew her. She was
a member of the Presbyterian church
and felt an abiding faith in Him
who doeth all things well.. A hus
band and two li.ttje girls have been
bereft of the light of their lives, and
a home made desolate by her death.
The funeral services took place on
Monday at the Presbylg.ian church.
Make the Tea T|ble Attractive.
No domestic sight is pleasanter in
its way than a tea table on a cold
winter night, spread with a bright
cloth and set out with dainty china
and shining silver, and with all the
cheer inspiring appurtenances of the
tea tray, with the plate of hot bread,
the savory dish of hot meat, and. the
little relishes that the housekeepers
know well how to supply. And in
summer its counterpart is seen iij the
table laid in the room brightened by
the level sun’s rays, where a crisp
salad, pilesof white and brown bread,
and a plate of rusk or tea bnscuit,
pitchers of milk, and a dish of ber
ries with cream galore revive the
fainting appetites and spirit of those
w ho have bore the heat and burden

•State Teachers Coin cution.
Prof. D. B. Johnson, chairman of
the executive committee of the State
Teachers’ Association, has published
a card announcing that the next
meeting of the Association will he
held at Anderson, on July, 22, 23
and 24. Members of the Association
will he entertained by the hospitable
people of that progressive city, and
will also get reduced railroad rates
to and from the meeting. An inter
esting programme is being prepared.
Those who desire to become members,
and who desire to enjoy the privi
leges of the Association, should send
to the secretary, Prof. A. R. Ranks,
Rock Hill, the annual dues, one dol
lar for men, and fifty cents for wo
men, and secure from him a mem
bership certificate, which will be
necessary to secure reduced railroad
rates and entertainment. Every ‘live*
teacher in the State should he a
member of the Association. Friends
of education are eligible to member
ship.
Is This So 1
We clip the following from Home
and Farm, suppose some of our far
mors try it in a small way and ru-
port the result.
We would call the attention of our
readers to the following statement
from an Ohio exchange:
The Ohio experiment station has
made some interesting experiments
showing the effect of removing tas
sels from corn. They were made to
test the theory that if the tassels
were removed from corn before tljev
have produced pollen, pollen bearing
being an exhaustive process, the
strength thus saved to the plant
would he turned to the ovaries and a
larger amount of grain he produced.
From each alternate row of a plot
of corn the tassels was removed as
soon as they appeared. Briefly, the
result of the experiment was that the
number of good ears and the weight
of merchantable corn were both a
little more than fifty per cent, grea
ter on the rows from which the tas-
S.els w ere removed tffan on the others.
This a subject of profound im
portance. It is a theory that can he
easily tested, each farmer should
make the experiment for himself.
Try it on a small patch of corn first.
Remove the tassels from each alter
nate row and see what the effect will

.Ben Terrell’s Address.
A largo crowd gathered in town
on Saturday to hear the address of
this prominent lecturer, and the
Court House was filled witl^ a very
attentive, and to some extent an en
thusiastic audience. Mr. Terrell is
a pleasing speaker, has a clear dis
tinct voice, and is not the least hit
sensational in his style. It would he
a great gain for the Alliance if all
their speakers would follow Mr. Ter
rell’s example and try to convince
their hearers by argument instead of
indulging ju abuse and vituperation.
The main point of his address was
the discussion of the Sub-Treasury
Bill, the adoption of w hich, he claim-j
ed, would he of immense benefit to 1
the farmers, and, incidentally of
course, benefit all other classes. He
made a very earnest plea to the mem
bers of the Alliance to unite on this
measure and insist upon its passage
by the next Congress. He did not
advocate the third party, hut simply
stated Hiat the members of the Alli
ance were free to join any party that
would best subserve their interests.
He criticised the newspapers for en
deavoring to keep up sectional ani
mosity, which criticism, was to a
very great extent, unjust. The pa
pers, of the South, have simply poin
ted out the danger to our section
would result from the formation of
a third part)’.
Now Try This.
It will cost you nothing and will sure
ly do you good, if you have a cough, cold
or any trouble with throat chest or lungs.

the prices of any other crlahlishment in
the South. He keeps the plants suitable
for all the ametuer cultivator, but if rare
varieties arc wanted lie can supply them
in a-very short time. The editor lias
dealt with Mr. Mertz for several years,
and can testify to his reliability and to
the splendid condition of all the plants
he sends out.
