tHE WOMAN’S INDUSTRIAL COL
LEGE.
The Cher aw Reporter is urging
the claims of Cheraw as a suitable
place for the location of this college.
There is not a better place morally,
socially or intellectually than the
historic old town of Cheraw; hut we
agree with the Sumter Freeman in
thinking it decidly better that it be
located at the Capital of the State.
It will certainly be more accessible
there than at any other jxiint, and
this, if for no other reason, should
decision in favor of Colum
bia. It detracts—^y-fflu.ch from
the dignity of the State to be putting
the location of itseducational institu
tions up to the highest bidder.
VEMALE SUFFRAGE.
"The extract, printed below is from
an editorial in the Nashville Chris
tian Advocate, and we suggest, in
-vase any of our readers have been
misled by the fanatical writings of
the advocates of female suffrage, that
they give it a careful persual.
What our opinion on the “woman
■viliestion” itself is, our readers well
know. We firmly believe that both
nature and revelation are squarely
• against all attempts to confuse and
mingle the positions and functions of
the two sexes. It is, moreover, a his
torical fact, which no one can succss-
fnlly deny, that Increasing civiliza
tion has always hail a tendency to
•produce a still wider differentiation
>in respect of these things. Men and
'women are less alike now than they
'.were a thousand years ago; and when
■the millennium comes they will be
still less alike than they now arc. At
’the bottom of all this agitation is
.'tihe mischievous notion, widly spread
-even among educated and intelligent
people, that everybody has a natural
"right” to participate in the affairs
of government Nothing is falser.
There are orders, ranks, diversities
in this world, us there w'ill also be
'in (lie world to come. Not unifor
mity, but variety, is the law of God’s
universe. If women may properly
fcomplaiu because they are denied
fHoinc privileges that men enjoy, men
a nay with equal grace complain at
being refused the stations, dignities,
and responsibilities of angels. We
'have not said that women is an in
ferior. God forbid that we should
utter any such nonsense as that.
There is no question of quality or
inequality at issue. All we maintain
is that “one star differe*h from
^another star in glory.”

Columbia is in competition with

“Freeman,” Sumter’s new paper, and
we tender our sincere acknowledge

the enterprise of Darlington.
The meeting at Cincinnati of those
who favor a third party movement,
will probably accomplish very little,
as signs of discord and division are
already apparent. President Livings
tone, of the New York Alliance, is a
delegate, and some of the western
men want him ousted from the con
vention. The Southern men present
will hardy represent anybody except
themselves and a very small follow-
in" in the Southern Alliances.
