S<^iie of the papery of the State -have;been discusaing the divorce law i|uestioit, and as there will, in all probability, Iw some measure intro duced at the next session of the Legislature, looking to such an en actment; its discussion id both timely and wise. It must he admitted that a great deal Can be said in favor of such a law, but while this is true, there are much stronger reasons why it would be best to let the matter, so far as South Carolina : s concerned, rest just where it now is. There can l>e no law enacted but that will bear hard in individual eases, and the ab- sense of a law of this kind in our State is uo exception to the general rule; but while granting this, we con scientiously believe that the granting of divorces for any cause would work infinitely more evil than is caused by the present law, and we regard the position of South Carolina as a very commendable one in respect to this matter. If divorces were granted for one cause, it would sim- j)ly open the door for the dissolution _ of the marriage tie for very trivial reasons, and we would soon have rases without number in our courts, of people seeking legal seperation. ' The husband tired of his wife or the YOU WILL FIND IN THIS wife disappointed in her husband Establishment one of the choicest could very casi'y trump up charges, j assortment of Millinery ever seen in ’ and, what is more to the point, have Darlington, with the novelties of the DESIRES TO INFORM THE PU13- lic that he has bought out the entire drug stock of Dr. W. .1. The exercise of a little judgement on the part of ladies in this matter would, in a very great measure, do away with the causes of unhappiness for it may pretty safely be assnaied, that, as a general rule, when a wo man marries a man who«e character; is such as to make her lot a hard one, she Inis full knowledge of it before hand, and her unhappiness is the legitimate outcome of her own folly. Of course there are exceptions to this, but it is very probable that fully nine tenths of the unhappy marriages are the result of marriages contruc- .Xe(T in defiance of the wishes of par ents and friends. •; ... IV hat we need is not a divorce law, but a social reformation that will * bring young ladies to the point of . believing that.it is not a very safe thing to marry a drunkard or gam bler with the hope of reforming him. The proceedings of the divorce courts, in some of the Slates, arc disgraceful and disgusting, and it would Ijo an evil day when such scenes were .made possible in South Carolina. season. The factory was erected last year, and the building now going up is only a storage ware house. The Fyeemun has evidently made up its mind to be very unhap py until Sumter has a similar enter prise. Sumter is a mighty stirring place, and will in all probability, very soon have a canning factory, and we suggest that the first can of fruit or vegetable* put up, be sent to the Freeman office. While this paper is anxiously waiting for the consu- matiou of its earnest desifes, Dar lington will supply Sumter with canned goods, with a special discount to the Freeman.
