DARLINGTON, S. C.
Wednesday, April 22, 1891.
The Columbia Record is a very
tootl jiajK-r, Imt a ItnowKslgc of jatetry
is certaiuly not one of its sj»ecialities.
anti we advise the editor to employ
some one to take charge of this de
partment of liis paper. In the \\ tsl-
uesdav’s issue of the Record, some
•one signing himself Jf. L. Mcl'reerv,
publishes Huhver’s well known and
beautiful Poem, “There is no Death,"
as original, and the editor is too
ignorant of poetry to detect the
fraud. This is one of the finest short
poems in the english language, and
any one attempting to palm off on
the public as original must Vie Vdess-
<*d with a remarkable degree of
stupidity.
In a recent issue of the Herald
it was stated that both of the lady
commissioners, of the Woman’s In
dustrial College, were supposed to be
advocates of female suffrage. e
made the the statement on what we
regarded as perfectly reliable infor
mation, but learning from a private
source that Miss Hemphill has never
been an advocate of this fanatical
movement, we very gladly make this
•correction.
We simply made tlie statement
ihaCthere was reason to apprehend
that the establishment of this college
would be regarded as an entering
wedge by the advocates of female
suffrage, and still adhere to this
•opinion.
