These annual meetings have unques tionably been productive of a great deal of good, and Darlington is al ways ready to give the members a warm welcome. LOCAL ITEMS. The entertainment that was to have been given for given for the Metho dist church has, owing to unavoid able circumstances, been given'up. The electric light building bus been painted and presents a very at tractive appearance. Everybody will rejoice when the lights arc turned on. Gov. Tillman last Thursday ap pointed the following board of phy sicians for Darlington County: B. S. Lucas, S._D. Harrell, W. J. Gar ner. Mr. Mertz takes pleasure in announc ing that he has a large collection of choice flowers for sale at his conserva tory, one and a half miles from the Square, and stands prepared to duplicate the prices of any other ertahlishment in the South. He keeps the plants suitable for all the ametuer cultivator, but if rare varieties are wanted lie can supply them in a very short time. I Trade Cyclone. Saturday the 28th of March, and Wednesday April 1st, were very busy days with our merchants, especially those who advertise and let folks know what they have, and some of the stores looked as if a cyclone had passed through them. Goods were heaped np on the counters in ap parently inextricable confusion, and the merchants and their clerks were kept on the run, trying to wait on all the customers that came in, but found it difficult work owing to the large number of people in town. A great many goods were carried out of town on those days, but there is no danger of their being exhausted as there is a constant procession of wa gons hauling in goods from the depot to replace the merchandise sold. If anyone visits Darlington and cant get suited, it will be useless for them to go elsewhere; from the simple fact that they really dont want any goods; but all who really need merchandise of any kind our town is the place to buy. _ The Darlington Guards. The maintenance of a well organ ized Iwdy of militia in this commu nity is all important—a proposition which, we feel sure, you will fully argument rule, the To The Ladies. We cull special attention to the statement of the Staunton Life In surance Co., and a perusal of the same will show how promptly their losses are paid. The system is sim ple and as cheap as is possible to give absolute security. The Com pany has a large business in the State, and has never had a law suit about any of its policies. The News and Courier have spoken very favorably of their enter tainments. Peterson’s Magazine for March is on onr table, and presents an appetis ing array of contents. It is an ideal periodical for ladies, for besides good reading matter there is a good deal of household information, and special attention is paid to fashion plates, and other matters qf interest to the fair sex. Steps are being taken for the crcc tion of a Methodist Church at the Factory, and when completed the work will lie under the charge of the Rev. A. J. Frierson w hose work em braces the churches in the vicinity of the town. The Methodist church at this place will assist in the work. The depot platform at Floyd’s Wits burned on Sunday night, mid with it about thirty bales of cotton. The cotton was the property of Mr. Josh Kirviu, but as it was placed there for shipment the Railroad Co., will have to pay for it. The fire was supposed to be accidental. that a man needs, and if a South Sea Islander were to walk in, clothed in the airy garments of the Tropics Kinard would soon have him arrayed in civilized garb. The fact of the business is that if the fat man and the living skeleton from a Dime Museum were to walk into his estab lishment, it would not demoralize Kinard the least hit, for his stock is equal to the emergency. There is, how ever, one thing he can’t do, make a very ugly man hanidsome, hut he will improve him very much, and make him at least passable looking. Read his ad. in to-day’s issue. A New Departure. In addition to a complete stock in his line of business, R. L. Dargun has made a new departure and will also deal in Pianos and Organs and can supply them at Factory prices, can be kept for fifteen days on trial. Hand In Your Nane. We again beg the old subscribers of the paper to come forw ard and give us their names and date of their subscriptions. The paper will carry out all contracts existing before the fire, but as the books were hurt we are obliged to call on subscibers to help us straighten matters up. The question of having an arch for Darlington at the Columbia Cen tennial is not, as yet, definitely set tled, but the amount necessary will probably be raised by private sub scription. It will never no for an enterprising town like Darlington to be left behind in a matter of this kind. The big Spring advertisement of Woods & Woods tells only a part of what they have as they only mention a few of the leading articles of their stock. Their assortment in all lines is finer than they have ever had, ant w hile these goods are being radidly disposed off, the supply is kept up by the constant arrival of new goods. A well known gentleman who visits Darlington frequently, but who is a resident of Charleston, visi ted the store of Woods & Woods on Tuesday, and purchased a dress for his wife. This speaks well for the kjnd of goods handled by the mer chants of Darlington. They stand ready at any time to compare prices and styles with any town in the State. xpectaney of holder. A New Paper at Sumter. Col. J. J. Dargan, a native and former resident of Darlington, in conjunction with Mr. E. F. Milier will soon cuter the arerra of journal ism, by the publication of a new pa per to be called the Freeman. It the new paper is as successful as it rivals, the Watchman and Southron, and Advance, in building up Its advertis ing patronage, its success is assnrred. Col. Dargan is a vigorous writer, and is not a novice at the business, hav ing been the editor of one- of the Sumter papers a number of years ago. Sumter is growing very rapidly and probably can support three pa pers. 8«mc Muilhft Yet te Live. Yesterday Governor Tillman re ceived a petition, numerously signed, asking him to respite Louis Williams, the negro murderer of Mr. Joseph Jamos, a white man, who is under sentence to hang at Darlington next Friday. The request it made on the Remarkable Rescue. Mrs. Michael Curtain, Flainflehl, 111., makes the statement that she caught cold which settled on her lungs; site was trea ted for a month by her family physician, but grew worse.
