Are They Consistent ?
A few months ago Wade Hampton
was howled down at Aiken while
speaking, and the Tillmanites were
outraged because he had taken any
part in the campaign, saying that he
had nothing whatever to do with the
State campaigns, and all such talk;
and this was an insult to Hampton,
who had done as much if not more
for South Carolina than any man in
the State. Now' these same Tillman
ites, through their State executive
committee, have invited him to speak
at Columbia and Charleston on the
27th and 28th of this month, in or
dor that the troubled waters may be
calmed by the words of the man whom
they so recently insulted. Wade
c,
m a campaign in which his State is
abused and slandered by her own
sons running for office; and yet
when others of her sons, who have
lieen outraged, choose to put up an
other ticket, then the services of the
old war horse are called for by these
foul-mouthed men to save the State
from ruin. Will he come ?
A Shame.
The following is an extract from
a letter published in the Columbia
Record, from Mr. J. A. Peterkiu,
well known planterof Orangeburg—
one of the best planters in the State
“South Carolina will be ashamed of
the day they make Tillman Governor
instead of Haskell. Is there a cause
for this? There is nothing without
a cause. It is simply this: A lot of
demagogues got to be officers in
sec ret society; they made a set of men,
who hud never been in a secret soci
ety before, believe they were imposed
upon by their merchants, lawyers
and bankers. Mr. Tillman, being a
shrewd politician, saw the situation
and just deliberately pocketed the
whole concern. Policy men have
gone in with them, and if Haskell
had not come out in opposition to
Tillman his pocket would not have
been big enough to hold yours. Go
back to the beginning of this fight
and let your conscience guide you
and all will be right”
gerous enemies that South Carolina
has ever had is the present candidate
for Governor, B. R. Tillman. Sim
ply to gratify his personal ambition
he has sown the seeds of discord from
one end of the State to the other;
by his unscrupulous use of his un
deniably great powers as a public
speaker he has so stirred up the pas
sions and prejudices of a large por
tion of our people that they will not
listen to a calm and dispassionate
discussion of the issues involved;
and by his false and malicious char
ges against all of our State ’ officials,
has made discord and division where
there ought to be harmony and uni
ty, and brought the Democratic par
ty to the verge of disruption.
There are three classes of men who
support Mr. Tillman. First, men of
the Pope and Gary type who are mere
hangers on of Mr. Tillman and en
dorse everything he says and does
simply that they may ride into office
under the shadow of his influence.
They are scarcely worthy of consid
eration, being mere puppets that can
only move at the touch of that mas
ter’s hand. The second class of his
supporters, and the only one entitled
to much respect or consideration,
are the larger portion of the farmers
of the State, a large majority of whom
are perfectly honest in their convic
tions and support Mr. Tillman be
cause they have been induced to be
lieve his slanderous charges and
think that, as he has had the courage
to unearth to corruption, it of ne
cessity follows that he is the best man
for Governor. Whatever of intelli
gence our people may have on most
subjects; politically they are igno
rant, and they fall an easy prey to
such arch demagogues as Tillman
and Shell. When Whittemore re
signed his seat in Congress to save
himself from expulsion, he thanked
God that his constituents could not
read; and Mr. Tillman may well be
thankful for the political ignorance
of his supporters. The third class
are those who denounce Mr. Tillman
and deny his charges, but will simply
sustain him because he is the nomi
nee of the convention. If they pre
fer party to principle, then they are
not open to argument; but it may
not be amiss to say that whoever sup
ports or votes for him, endorses Jhe
man and his charges, and no twist
ing or turning can make it otherwise.
A man is judged by his acts and not
by his belief, and if he votes for Mr.
ntry at large that his charges are
true.
The threats and denunciations
made by Mr. Tillman and his sup
porters are absurd and undignified
and only serve to show the weakness
of their cause. There is no reason
why the election should not be per
fectly peaceable and quiet and if it
is otherwise Mr. Tillman will be re
sponsible for any violence or blood
shed that may result. Rage and
fume as they may, it will not deprive
Judge Haskell of_a single vote of
those who are only contending for
principle and striving to maintain the
purity of the Democratic party; be
lieving as they do that if Mr. Till
man is elected without protest, the
condition of the party will be infi
nitely worse two years hence than it
now is.

The following appeared in the
News and Courier of October 15th
as an “advertisement” over the sig
nature of “Banker”: “There is only
one question before the people of
this State: Will the future of the
State be best secured by the election
of J udge Haskell or Capt. Tillman ?
All admit the high character of the
Haskell ticket; ^even the Irby com
mittee admit it, but many fear the
disruption of the Democracy. Al
ready Capt Tillman, by his threats
of violence, and his committee, by its
insane demand upon Governor Rich
ardson, in the name of “white su
premacy,” % to give them all the com
missioners of election, have done more
to secure the downfall of Democracy
here and in the United States than
ten splits in the party. Entrust this
Government to men whose views of
life are limited to the narrow con
fines of their respective counties,
and in less than two years the com-
plicated machinery of a Government
such as ours over a populace such us
ours will be shattered into fragments.
I, for one, believe that our civiliza
tion can only be preserved by elect
in': the Haskell'ticket.”

What Will the Result Be ?
The great majority of the news
papers in the State were opposed to
Tillman before his nomination, and
and a great majority of them are now
opposed to Judge Haskell’s election.
In spite of this opposition Tillman
was nominated. Can it be that
things are going to turn out the same
way for Haskell? However that may
be, the movement seems to be gaining
ground and many men who do not
now appear to favor it will, when
voting day comes, cast their ballots
for Haskell and say nothing about it.
There are also a goodly number of
Tillmanites who, having been disap
pointed in their aspirations, will vote
for IlaSEell in order to experience
the vengeance which is sweet to their
souls. You may call the Haskellites
Independents or anything you choose,
but their position is not that of In
dependents usually; and those who
compose the Haskell ticket are above
those who make up the Tillman
ticket in all things which go to make
good State officers. These points will
have their influence on the voters,
and men who would not vote for or
dinary Independents will cast their
vote for Alexander C. Haskell and
his ticket. It is difficult to foretell
what it is going to amount to, but,
as the the force of circumstances has
put the State into a critical condition,
we must make tho best of it and do
all in our power towards the mainte
nance of law and order whether wc
vote for Haskell or not.
Nevada is enjoying an anomoly
just now in its political experience.
It is without a Governor or Lieuten
ant Governor, recent deaths having
vacated both of those offices. The
State will have to do without a Chief
Magistrate until the next election.
