A Serious Compi.ant.?Mr. Le

desiring to come South are treated
with great indifference at New York
and are thereby, doubtless-, diverted
from this course. This is a sei ions
matter, considering the importance
of the flow of immigration in this di

beautiful and cheap article. It is

Tue Meeting at GRouiiEs.?We

the Sunday School meeting lust week

a success. Tbc attendance of dele

Edwards, Snider. McMillan, Moore,
and others of tin e'ergy, were present
and participated in the meeting'. On
Sunday morning an enthusiastic,
mass meeting of the children was ad

Dancinu, and Fancy Work.?Miss
OU?e Thompson, an accomplished la

is now in our city and has opened a
dancing school at the Fair Building.
Miss T. started M??dny night with
a good class and has the promise of
others. Her instructions here arc
much admired. They arc modest
and beautiful. She comes highly re
commended as a teacher of the p >lite
art, teaching all the modern and Eu
ropean dances. She has taught class
es with success in eighteen cities.
M"i9*T also wishes to obtain a class
of ladies for fancy work. All should
sec her specimens of point and mac

and chenile embroidery. She is boat

New Comers.?Mt.'Wdi. Let ham.
a most worthy Scotchman, with wife
and four children, came, from
Brooklyn, N. Y. to Oraugcburg last
week. This excellent family basset
tied on the place of Mr. Vastinc
Joiner in the Fork, a few miles from
town. Mr. Let ham says', tlmt if he is
successful and pleased, a number of
his friends and kinsmen will be sure
to follow him and settle iu our midst.
One of his relatives is now on Iiis way.
We feel assured that our people will
do all in their power to make the new
comers happy and satisfied, and we
hope that at the end of the year thc-y
may have reason to be pleased with
their selection of a new home, and
that many others fi\>m across the
water, or from lue North may cast
t heir destiny with them. 'Phis is the
class of settlers vre need, und wo hope
that :i nucleus is now formed for a
growing colony iu our immediate
vicinity.
Schooi. Houses.?Now is the time
to prepare for the coining school
year by building proper school
houses. In some localities there are
no school houses and schools arc not
running ou account of this fact, and
in other places those in use area dis
grace to our advancing age. What
then is tin--pla n.^ T*? build I hum en
tirely out of the public fund would
takeaway from the means of educat
ing our children the coming year.
The sensible plan seems to us to be,
for the people, both white and color
cd, to contribute of their means and
labor, and, as fair as possible, put up
the school houses themselves, arid
save the public money lor teaching.
1 f this however ca-rv't be done, fef. the
houses be put up out of the public
money. We hope school trustees
will encourage the people, for their
own good, to co-operate, with the
public school officials, for hi this way,
and in t his way alone, can the sys
tem be made a blevdu".
