Why don't we have it? Mr. T. C. Ilubbell has started an Ice cream saloon at his variety store. Call and be refreshed. Court will adjourn when the busi ness of this session is over to meet again on Tuesday, May, 17th. A gentleman said, on Monday, that he believed plOperty was as high in Orangeburg as in New York. Judge Kershaw and Solicitor Jer vey both look well, aud go into their court business' with their usual earn est n ess. Wt understand that Mr. J. F. Way intends to build a line resilience on bis lot on ituuscll street, purchased from the estate of W. M. Ilutsou. Col. C. Ii. Simon ton, of Charles ton, paid our town a vi.sit last week, during which, as a member of the Board of the Agricultural College, lie visited Claltin University. The representatives of the press are enjoying their lieuufort and Florida trip this week. Mr. Stephen Elliott of Beaufort will deliver the address of welcome. The work is commenced on the foundation of Dr. Burton's new building to be erected between Mr. .Lathrop's residence and Gen. I/Jar's ollice. Rash young men! Gi Cannon has just re ceived one of the largest assortment of fishing tackle ever brought Id this market, consisting of Japanese canes, lines, hooks, <tc, which he is selling at bottom prices. The Young Americas Were out in full force on Tuesday afternoon. A trial of speed was made with the hose reel over a space of about 200 yards, and ou the first run, the lime made was 1.10 and on the second run In 1.13. Rev. W. R. Parier will preach a sermon on Sunday night at the Rap tist Church on the subject of ''Temperance." We believe this will l?e the commencement of a series of Bermons followed up by the other ministers of the town. The Columbia HeyhUr says: "The want is not a cotton picking ma chine, but a genuine cotton planter who can make two ideas grow where he scarcely had one before. That's the want of the times and it is coin ing to time fast." Eros is fixing up bis establishment in fine style, lie is doing everything to please his patrons. Resides his ice cream garden, he now has a splendid soda water fountain in ope ration at which all can come and re fresh themselves during the coming hot days. On Saturday afternoon a colored man who had been indulging in very boisterous and offensive language was taken by Marshal Albrecht to the jail. On his wa;, he resisted and en deavored to escape, but was forced to succumb to. the club of the indomi table marshal. His penalty, at the Mayor's Court, was $2.50 or live days in jail. We think resistance to the police is an offcucc that should be se verely punished; We regret to learn that Mr. 'Cor nelson was taken quite dick while in New York. Hay and corn! We acknowledge, with much thanks, a complimentary invitation to attend a Sunday School Anniver sary celebration near Mr. W. F. Phil lips', in the Fork, on Saturday. We enjoy the honor of several invita tions to pic-nics on the same day and feel anxious to he at all the places at the same time. The exhibition of Miss K. S. Al bcrgotti's school will take place at Way's Hall, on Friday evening. This is an old and nourishing school, and we know that the pupils will do cred it to their teacher, oil this, as they have done on previous occasions. A full house is expected. See notice in another column of the excellent property of Or, Dubois for sale. This property is most de sirably located in the pleasantest and healthiest portion of our town. Dr. Dubois and his family left Orangeburg t his week for his home in New York. We are sorry to learn tliat this family has left us perma nently. Marshall, the agent of Jo) Person Davis' Hook for this coun ty, and who has been with us for the last few days, will be absent for the next two weeks, canvassing other portions of the county. The Independent Fire Company, colored, escorted by the ('oincts, were out oil parade on Monday afternoon, with a full band of mus'e, ami pre senting a tine appearance. They slopped and paid their respects to Acting Mayor Albergotti, who, in lining terms complimented '.hem upon their zeal aud efficiency, and encouraged them"in the conti nun not) of their public, spirited etlbrts. We hear of a very reprehensible practice indulged in to the annoy ance of the store-keepers. A little colored child was caught one day this week running into a store, while the clerks worein the rear, and slip ping out with an apple or two. Steal ing apples may seem to be a small tiling, but such nie deeds ami pro pers i lies, which unchecked, will lead to the gallows or the penitentiary, bet the parents teach their children better morals. 'The services at the installation of Rev. Probst, the new Lutheran minister, were of a very interesting character. The Key. J. F. Kiser of our towii gave the charge to the new pastor. Hev. Hawkna conducted the impressive ceremonies, Rev. Probst enters upon his pastoral duties under most favorable auspices. All seem delighted to have a pastor of stiel vast experience ami of such earnest ness in the cause of the Master. Al ready new life seems to be infuscd into the Church and community. A Strawberry Festival will be given nt the Young America Hall this afternoon and to-night by the ladies for the bcnelit of the Lutheran Church. The doors >vill be open at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, and again in the evening. There will be no charge for admittance, and every one will enjoy the privilege of buying a plate of strawberries and a glass of ice cream tastily fixed up at the hands of the ladies. The good cause, the warm weather, and the smiles of the fair ones will all combine to give additional relish to the tempting re freshments. Let all who can, come out. The annual Spring excursion to Charleston is in operation this week. To morrow, Friday, May (Ith, will be the last day for the buying-of tickets which will he good to return until next Monday. The attractions in the "City by the Sen," will be Hit Grand Floral Fair, which closes to morrow night, and the Grand Shoot ing Tournament. The rates are as follows for the round trip from the places named: Fort Motte, $3; St. Matthews, $2.75; Jamison, $2.70; Still on, $2.-15; Orange burg, $2.35; Rowcsville, $2.15; Branchville, $1.85. We have no doubt, many of our citi zens will avail themselves of the cheap rales. -in -j- - - - -Gr^r=r=? As tlie sickly season is coming on, we hope the Board of Health will take every precautionary step for the most perfect sanitary condition of our town. There is no subject more important to a town or city than health. It in thin that consti tutes a most essential branch of the government of all large cities. The foundation of health in cities is cleanliness and a proper system of drainage. Under drains arid sewers may be. too expensive for Orange burg, but with our rapid growth in population, and consequent increase of sinks, is their no way of carrying olf some of the filth, or lessening its ofieusivencss in the thickly settled parts of our town? It cannot be wholesome for everything to be left to be absorbed in the ground, or evaporated in the air. The water of the wells cannot fail to be impreg nated with what passes into the ground. We don't know If any im provement can be made, or whether we can afford to take any steps for the better. We only mention what we dn in order that the great sub ject of the sanitary welfare of our town may be brought prominently to the attention of our Bourd of Health for their wisest action. The May term of Court commenced here on Monday, Judge Kershaw presiding. The Judge made a clear and forcible charge to the Grand Jury, laying considerable stress up on their duties under the concealed weapon's law. The first case tried was that ngainst Robert Carter and Aex McCall, two colored men, who Were found guilty of breaking into Mr. J. D. D. Fairy's store at night and stealing $140 worth of dry goods and groeeries. M. I. Browning, Esq., represented the prisouers and Soli citor Jet vey the State. The second case was that of Irvin Moore, color ed, who pleaded guilty of carrying Concealed weapous. Mr. Lath top, his counsel, was granted time to submit affidavits in mitigation Of the offence. On Wednesday the following cuses were tried: Rolit. Murphy and Dempsy .lack son, charged with stealing a there from S. 1'. Wingnrd?the Judge in structed the jury to acquit. Tony Si Strunk, assault and bntle ry with intent to kill, guilty of as sault, $25 fine or 00 days in jail, George Banyan, stealing $30 from W. lv. Smith, guilty, but recommend ed to mercy. James Bucy. stealing money and notes to the nmount of $70.00 from Win. Neil, guilty. J no. Htird, stealing a hog from James Logan, not guilty; On Wednesday the following were tried: The Slate vs John Tyler alias William Tyler, bigamy, guilty. Stale vs Wm. Duncan and Let ICeitt nlias Ray Kcitt, grand larceny, guilty. State vs John Mackcy, larceny live stock, not guilty. He nas dressed in black pants, a light colored brown coal and a blue check shirt with a large brans buttoo on the bosoiri, and congress shoes, lie was scratched in the face during the struggle. He worked for a Mr. Deuj. C'rum near ltowesville, s. C, the day before the assault was committed and gave Iii? name as Govan Hrown, and Raid lie was from Sumier, S. C. After, in his flight, he gave his name as William Johnson.
