Wo understand that all the land

were open on Sunday. They were all

fact that they were arranged entirely
by little girls of the congregation.
All the services of the day were par

The sad intelligence of the death
of Mrs. T. R. Aialouc at St. Mat

gloom over her large < iivle of
friends in Orangeburg where she
I:i:s been fio h.ng and favorably
know. Suffering from ill health for
a number of years, she bore all with
that Christian meekness and resigna

to receive her crown of reward. She
leaves a largo and growing family

There is good reason to believe
that the villain who assaulted Miss
Cunningham near nur town, has been
caged lit last. A negro has been ar
rested in Kichlnnd, by the name of
Joe Jones upon the strong supposi
tion that he is the man. Mr. Cun
ningham, the father of the young
lady, went up ami (hiding the man to
correspond with the description of
the fellow who committed the deed
got out a warrant and caused him to
be incarcerated to await further
identification.
Jones has been guilty of similar
conduc* before, and at the time of I be
assault upon Miss Cunningham he
was absent from home, arid supposed
to be in Charleston.; He has marks
of recent scratches on his face and
neck.

On Sunday afternoon very inte
resting exercises were held at the
colored i'rcshylerittn Church in our
town under the pastorate of Rev. \V.
L. Johnson in the interest of the Sun
day School of the Church. The little
church, which was dedicated in the
morning, an able sermon being
preached on the occasion by Rev. Jas
Uroyv, of Charleston, was lillcd to
overflowing at both the morning and
afternoon services. In the afternoon
addresses were delivered by Revs. Jus
Grow and W. L. Cole, who bad come
from abroad to conduct the dedica
tion services, a ml by Rev. T. II. Lo
gitre and Messrs. \V. lb Thompson
and S. R. MclHchnmp of our town.
The music of the occasion con
ducted by the excellent wife of the
pastor, and participated rn by the
whole c mgregation, was inspiring to
all.
Portions of scripture were recited
by a number of the ? young folks,
showing the training of the teachers.
These people arc certainly engaged
in a most excellent work, and should
receive the.countenance, support and
encouragement of all good citizens,
who desire the elevation of society,
which can only be accomplished by
the moral, religions anil intellectual
cull tire of the youth of all classes.
Mr. Jas. Shepnrd, a hard working
fanner, of Fort,Motte, lost everything
he had, a few days ago, tilt the burn
ingof his house while he and his
wife were hard at work in the field.
They saved nothing but the clothes
they were wearing in the field. Their
neighbors.are very kind to them in
their ?uisfortune which appeals to the
sympathy of the whole county, and
calls for a substantial response. Let
us help our unfortuunte brother on
life's rugged pathway.
After the late eold spell, believing
that the fruit were all destroyed, we
were constrained to bid farewell in a
local to peach pies and apple dump
lings. We are, however, glad to be
informed that the fruit outlook fcs not
near as bad as we feared. Mr.'~J. A.
Fanning, our County Commissioner,
brought into our olliee last Saturday,
several peach limbs crowded ' with'
the young fruit, in perfect condition
and assures us that he has a hundred
trees in his orchard unscathed by the
cold and frost. We have since heard
similar good reports from other parts
of the county.
We learn with pleasure that oc
casionally sonic of the visitors to the

wives from New England, are for the
present making their borne with us.

Oranoehuro, 8. C, April 11th 1831,
The nppottionfmnt of the school fUftdn
for the present fircal year being now made
known, 1 would respectfully suggest to the
school Trustees of such school District* of
the County whose schools have stopped
from the withdrawal of tbo children to go
into the crops, or from other causes, nnd
to whose credit, liiere may be a surplus of
funds, to use the same by reopening their
schools during the months of July and
August when the crops are htid by, and
the parents are more able and willing to
spare their children. This suggestion ap
plies to schools that have stopped have or
not- yet opened, and not to those that are
now in successful operation.
