This is question which will soon
have to be decided, and as 11 u* dele
gates to Columbia go tininsti'ueled,
it is iinportaiit to arrive al :i correct
derision, lo ascertain, as far as pos
sible, the views of tho people of our
County oh (he subject. Sonic of the
Counties in the State have instructed
their delegates to nominate at once:
and others have instructed them lo
post pone.
The Orungoburg Convention we
think wisely did not bind ils dele
gates, but left the mailer lo their dis
cretion. Siill they wore nol left en
t'irely without a hint. Several of the
Clubs whose proceedings were pub
lished, declared in favor of postpon
ing nominations :it present, while
none, thai wo know of, instructed in
favor of immediate nominations. He
sides this allusion having been made
in the Convention in favor of im
mediate nominations, several dele
gales arose Iii dt Heren I parts of the
hull and opposed the i lea.
Thoro are strong- arguments ad
vaneed on brith sides of the question.
The advocates of immediate nomiua
tions argue that ii will allay bitter
ness, and that in Charleston ami
other Counties a long campaign Is
necessary.

ting forward of a good ticket is of far
greater concern.

THE DEMOCRATIC < ON VENTION,
"The Democratic County Conven
lion which assembled in the (purl
House on last Saturday, the ollieial
minutes of which appear in another
place, was :i most intelligent atid re
prcsenlative body.
The attendance was large, nearly
?every Club in the County being re
presented, and the deliberations ojul
actions were wise und harmonious.
The delegates 16 Columbia were

OUJtt PROSPECTS. I
The prospect) of the Democratic
pany in our State niul County is
most encouraging. So far us State
pnicers are concerned, the Radicals
will hardly have the hardihood to
make any opposition; or, if they do,
it will be so lifeless that it will hang
liken | >: 111 upon their County'efforts*
Nor is the prospect much brighter
for them in the County. Their de
mornlizut ion is apparent, and all the
campaigning and organizing cannot
bring their scattered fragments to
gether. They are falling to pieees
from their own rottenness.
The colored people are getting
sense enough to see that the so call
ed Radical party i.^ nothing more
than n ring or machine to keep a few
chronic olliee-seekers in fat places.
The musses who are making their
bread by the sweat of their brow are
tired of supporting a privileged class
oft i.ml House ? entry. Democratic
government bus been mild and fair.
The colored people see it. They see
that under Democratic rule the
country is prospering. The corn
cribs are lull,and peaee and plenty
is commencing to smile upon us
again. These stubborn facts will
make moit' votes than all the brazen
phylacteries of unscrupulous [dace
hunters.
THE IIOMF.STEAI).
A very interesting decision as to
the Ibfee of the Homestead act has
just been rendered by the Supreme
Court iti the ease of Norman A. Rull
vs. John ('. Rowe.
Mr.-llull held a judgment against
Mr. Rowe, obtained previous to the
passage of I he 1 |omcstcnd act.
L'nder a judgment of Mr. J. M.
( 'ope. also obtained previous to the
passage of the Homestead act, M r.
Rowe had his Homestead of 500 acres
assigned and set oil'on Snake Swamp.
After this Mrs. Sarah Wat; obtained
n judgment on n < :>nt; act also obtain
ed previous to the Homestead. Under'!
ibis latter judgment the Homestead
assigned to Mr. Rowe was levied
upon and advertised for sale; and at

Mr. Hull linder Iiis judgment who

and brought action for .ejectment. In
defense Mr. Rowe set i p his claim
of Homestead. The Supreme Court

is nil evident and growing disposi

man w ho may be acceptable.

"As far us we are able to learn the
sentiment of the people of Abbeville,
the people prefer a third man for
Governor, for the reason that they
believe ii for the good of the party.'1
The argument is that in conse
quence of the Hampton-Gary euibro
glio and the bitterness it has engen
gendered, if either llugood or Gafy
is nominated, the friends of the ol her
may be inditfeveut, if not estranged.
A third man, it. is thought, may
harmonize all differences That may
exist.

KNIGHTS OF HONOR.
The annual meeting of the Su
preme Lodge of the Knights of I lonor
of Ilm United states commenced in
Charleston on Tuesday. Thirty two
States are represented, and some of
the most distinguished men in the
Hinted Stales arc in attendance. The
exhibit of the liunncial condition
and future prospects of the order is
encouraging. Kloqueut and able
speeches were made at the reception
meeting by Mayor Courtney, Hey. 10.

The order is gaining a wide spread
populni'itv, anil seems destined to
surpass everything of the kind" ever
inaugurated.

hood of the "New Bridge," near Branch
ville, arc requested to meet the Jloard of
County Commissioners at Raid Dtidsrc, at
12 o'clock SI., on tlie 24th May ISSU, to
consult upon the feasibility of repairing
said Bridge, or whether it would not bu
advisable to abolish the same. If at the
consultation above proposed, the Commis
sioners determine to repair the Bridge, it
will lie on said day let out for such repairs
