The editor of this p:iper desires to
express his high appreciation of the
compliment contained in the resolu
tion passed at the hist meeting of lue
Congarco Club, which appears in the
ofllcial report published to day, re
commending him to the Convention
ns a suitable person for the ollice of
County Chairman of tin Democratic
party, and to return his heart tell
thanks to the Club lor their conII
deuce and good opinion; bul he would
most respectfully beg that the atten
tion of Democrats would be t urned
in another direction in looking for
one to fill this important ollice, as the
duties of the position would seriously
conflict with his other duties, both
public and private. He feels assured
that there ore others fully competent,
who have the leisure and the ability
to 1111 the ollice, and thai the party
would suiler no detriment by his
declination.
He feels that he can work more
vigorously and acceptably, for the
success of the I leinoci at ie party i :i i lie
position which he now occupies, und
to t his end I he columns of the Ti.mks
shall be most earnestly devoted.
In this connection permit us !?> 1
recommend, as a matter absolutely ;
essential lo victory in the coining
campaign the utmost harmony among
the members of the party', and :: sphil i
of concession on all sides.
Let ihi-s spirit enter into the cam
paign in the beginning, und be main
tained to the end, :\y.'\ victory will
perch upon our banners.
Allow us in conclusion, to con
gratulate the Congarco Club for hav
ing the honor of being the first Club
to wheel into litlO tllld uplift the
banner of Democracy in the long
anticipated and momentous Campaign

material PROSl'ekity.
The evidences of material pros
perity are every where around ns.
Our people have almost entirely re
covered from the effects of the war
and the masses of th are doing
better than ever before. In one r? - j
spec! a long stride forward has been '
made, and that is in Ihe increased
production of the soil, which Is tin
direct result of the revolution in out
labor system. Slavery was a heavy
clog to progress and improvement.
"Necessity i> Ihe i. other of in\< nib n,
ami. under Ihe i hanged s\ stem, i ho \
adage has proved true. Inventions
atiil improvements in agricull urn I im
plements and in Ihe cult i vat i in of I ho
soil have increased hundred fold
since the close of the war. One aero
now produces what live did before.
Small farms are taking the places of
immense domains; sind energy, thrift
and neatness is every vvhereohserv
ed.
And another result of Ihe wsir, in
which we should feel proud, is the
prompt and cheerful adaptation of
our Soul hern women to the changed
circumstances. As the> nohl^ inin:
Lstered to our wants during the war
they cheerfully adapted themselves
to the sitii.ition. when all was ovi r
nnd the cause losL. The prosperity
of the South is more due to them than
to any other cause. May Heaven
smile upon i Ik hi and hie? s 1 hem !
Nor me the signs of prosperity
alone lo he found in our prh ale ]
boiues. The establishment of fne- j
tories nil over the Sotit h. tu I the ui
gantic Railroad movements which are
redounding lo ihe prospei':
Southern cities, till poml Iii Ihe t ainu
direction.
Had it nol been for the terrible
scourge d!' carpet1, bag rille, which was
almosi as great a curse an the war
itself, I hose things would have conn
to pa SS l< >Ug hel'i-re.
In ibis go;iei:il prosperity all are j
benefited, Ihe laborer aswcll as the
capitalist. The eyes of Ihe colored
man ought especially to he opened to
the benefits of honest nnd economical
government, if they w.ould <>:ily lay
aside their prejudices, and free them
selves from the influence of designing
and corrupt politicians.
Tin' era of prosperity is dawning
upon us. Do we, upon the very
threshold of a new ami bright futtiroi
which is fraught with happiness to
all. intend to allow ran- and party
prejudices to divide us, ami engulf us
in political and material ruin.
Li t the common sens1' of our com
munity assert itself, and politicians
be cast in the background and the
future of the South, in which white
ami black are equally involved will be
lull of promise and cheer.
i HK CLUB HOLLS.
We think it very important that
tin- Club Rolls should be carefully
reviewed and corrected in the prima
ry meetings of the campaign.
Great changes take place in two
years, and the electing of delegates
on the basis of the old roll is not
likely to result in an equal, fair and
proportionate representation in the
(Vuntv Convention.
Besides this, we want a true aiid
gi nut no, a nd not an imaginary list lor
practical purposes. Order, system
and discipline arc essentials to siit
cess in all things.
Let us organize, and do it practi
cally, iI' want to succeed.
OLK PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
Hon. Rohcrl Aldrieh, of Burnwell,
has recently delivered an address lie
forts the Teachers* Institute of Blnck
\ii!o. which is Idled with sen ihlcahd
practical suggest ions, lie says the
two hundred thousand dollars now
levied is not sttflleienl to run the
schoois more than one-fourth of the
time, and yet the Mate can do no
more. What then isto be doneV
.Mr. Aldrieh says, let the people, of
their owu accord, augment the school
tax ami keep the schools open the
whole lime. The State furnishes the
basis; let the people furnish the ref t.
Let bach community make .:i> ail it
can. The people are not too poor id '
j
educate their children. "Themoney,*'
Mr. Aldrieh truthfully says, "which
i i paid in at the door of :;::v circus
which visits our county would sup
port many sclioola -Tor nOiir) muiittis."
Besides this, if the money is not i
given, there is not a farmerwho could
not pay in kind or provisions for the
education of his children.
It is only in this way that we can
utilize the public schools and secure
tliii 1 est teachers. The pai'< nt - and
the State must cooperate. In this
way v.i might build up a useful and
practical public school system.
THE KILKENNY FICHT.
The regular Democratic Conven
tion of the Slate of New York, and
tlic Kelly Con Vent it a met oii Monday
in I5yi-jicii.se. The Kilkenny light it
seems is to be kept up. A proposi
tion was ottered from the Kelly wing
to the Regular Convention lor a
conciliation, but was res pectfully do
[?lined.
Mr. Tilden was ni".-i llercely do.-,
nounced bji the Kelly crew.
I'Torn all appearances the parly in
New York is hopelessly divided, and,
unless a reconciliat ion iseffected, de
feat seems ine\ ilal'lc.
Tildisn is the man w ho crushed the

corruption. Ilcncc the bitterness
