sectional nnitnosity, or to enrage any
Southern heart by dwelling upon the
memories of Confederate days. No
newspaper in the South has been more
zealous than the Newa and Courier
in the endeavor to bring about true
pacification and real reunion. No
newspaper is more anxious to make
this country one in sentiment and
hope, and indivisible in fortune. But
there is nothing to gain, for any cause,
by toadying and adulation. Give

whose public conduct is narrow and
selfish, or brutal and capricious. To
act otherwise is to say that the South
docs not appreciate the difference

between a Hancock and a Sheridan.
It is to say that all men are alike to
her, if they have '.he power to do her
harm, or if anything can bo made
out of them ! This is not Southern
sentiment; it is not American senti
ment. The respect of our quondam
foes wc have enjoyed, because they
believed that, in war, the Southern
people were honest, sincere and self
sacrificing. These Grant receptions,
if.they continue, will convince the
whole country that the Southern
people are disingenuous, or are want
ing in a nice sense of what is due to
