The Good flirr of a Profession.
Thousands of poople everywhere
will acknowledge the justness ol the
following tribute to a certain profes
sional class:
Th, Joinih/ Phyrinan.? 11c is hut
a man; be pursues a science,founded
on shifting sands; his work is largely
experimental, and in many places he
gropes in a more than twilight gloom.
But to our ignorant hclpfeissness his
limited knowledge seems 10 be the
clear sight of a god, his slightest
averment a thing to treasure i?p and
consider carefully for its storo of
truth, his decision an affair as immu
table as the laws of the Universe. I f
wo die, wo cling to his hand as we
step into the dark river, while he is
like the comforting rod and staff of
the Scripture; if we live, we feel as
through his determination an 1 b :
cause of his effort.
Not that we ignore, b / any means,
the great and merciful Power.behind
him; but wo recognize him as the
agent of that Power, who has put
into his hands, as it were, the issues
of birth ami the grave.
The doctor, jiV :d, seems to us un
like all other men. He is i in person a I
as a spirit. We send for him in our
troubles; we go to him with our griev
ances; we confess to him the ailm >nts
we would hide from all the world; we
no more try to "put the best foot for
ward,' with him than wc won hi if ho
were omniscient, for we are aw.ire
that unless he sees us as we are, he
can afford us no aid. He, indeed,
and no other, is the "Tonib of Se
crets." He is acquainted with the
inner recesses of households, with the
histories of tortured liveS; he knows
over what homo peace broods; ::o
knows where neglect and contention
and abuso work havoc, hud where
dark stains run in the bloo I from
generation to generation, to reveal
themselves somo day in foul fungus
or dislraight brain. To all he brings
a consolatiou of his own, a delicate
sympathy, a promise of the wh ole
that be has an assurance of best effort,
ft sense that everything which .-kill
aud8cicnce can do is being dune, and
that the rest is only in the hands of
God.
And when we arc in the dreadful
presence of some sickness whose un
known issues touches upon the awful
mysteries of death, who is there that
comes into the room so like the com
mander of the forces of light, scatter
ing those of darkness, as tho family
physician? Who seems, liko him, to
bo the actual vicegerent of tho groat
spirit of good, fighting the inroads of
evil? IIow he labors, how, indefatig
able he is, how be suffers w'ith'us, and
wrestles with fate for us! He rises
in tho dead of night, perhaps to walk
through the furious storm perhaps to
skate over fro/en rivers, perhaps to
drive miles in biting wintry wind--.
Light comes in with him, then, out
of the thick darkness. In the morn
ing he brings in the outside vigor of
the healthy world. He is sure, to
como and give us reassurance just
when the sun is departing and taking
all our little cheer with him as the
dreadful night sets in again. And
when the balance bangs so that a
hair's weight may incline it cither
way, up into the happy light or down
into the dark region where all aban
don hope, then he spends sleepless
nights heside us, discards less serious
matters, is away only on Hying visits,
makes our woes hi j own, and mani
fests on his errand of mercy all the
devotion of love.
And what motives are they that urge
him to this sublime usefulness, thi.i
work of suffering? It can be only the
love of science and love of his fellow
men that spur him to this heroic duly,
to this unfailing sacrifice; and beyond
his success from day to da)', the chief
reward ho has is that his very work
at onco refines enlarges his nature,
and gives his soul all the time a
stronger and nobler existence.
Never, then, can we pay or attempt
to pay a good family physician the
obligation of gntitude that we owe
him.
Tilden and Ewing.
Tilden has undoubted and uncom
promising strength among the people,
lie is stronger to-day among the mas
ses of the people, two to one, than ho
is among tho poff'idatis. We doubt
whither any aspirant could beat him
in Kentucky, and, if Robinson carries
New York in November, all tho poli
ticians on earth couldn't beat bini for
the first placo on the ticket in 1880
And, if Ewing lilts Ohio out of the
Radical ruts, tho ticket ought to, will
be and. shall be, Tilden and Ewing.?
J'rinclon (.A//.) Banner,
(joining hack from a little trip to
Havre, a Parisian thus bewai'cd his
misfortune to a railway companion :
''Uno thing is certain, you won't

in his eyes, "An l it was ; new cane,
