it peers to me as a general thing
people is t?>o much interested in other

how it is wid you. It ma be you like
a stew, mixed drinks, mackaroiiie or

too mauy lips git to flap pin over one

in de windin up. But it peers to me
1 can't etnl.race the pin! I wish to un

Now, 1 dont beleve in sich. If you

and do it again. Now my motto has
been, never do beb in the don* things
you're ashamed for the worl I to

lempance phellers, but 1 don't bear
any resemblance to them at ill, lor I
don't beleve in ttmpr.ince no how.
Its bery good to fool people on, but
it never goes back onasehoncr. No,

Now my fi'tends let me tell you one
thing, you follow the dictates cfyoitr

the most money is in, that do. If it is

The election for Mayor is over.
The Orgh boys are good lidiermau.
They didn't go back on their skid in
the electi m. They seined (Sain | deep
and a big fish was the result. No use
in tryin to git away wid these sort ol
men. They ate boss traders by birth
i and cant be fooled. I felt satisfied
the man that got the ni03t voted
J would he elected, and was tryln to get
up a bet iu (hat line, but couldn't find
a man with pluck enough tu take tue
up. The Ggt boys is mighty sea ry
phcllers on bettin any how. Now in
my country a phcller would be g'ad^
to have the chance to make a speck
that way. The tickets was mightily
split, and from the time it took the
managers to count them I think tliay
must have been stickin them together
again. I stood round to bear the
result Until I caught a pane in my
back, which run .sorter North and
South and I ain't got over it yet. If
ever a pheller says poll to me again
I use ;i pole tbout the waistband of
his pnuts. Now /'vc run all sorts of
things in my life, Rqurrels, rabits,

make grub by ruuin a cam pan -i will
soon fine that his b riches are about
two sizes- too large.
"i.li" has a splendid field to work
in now, but if he don't du any belter
plowin than he did among the roots
and lig trees. I'd advise him to lay by
before he begins, lie has mighty
good idecs, but they arc badly scat

one korucred. Iiis fancy notions is
all north, and 1 ant afraid he wont git
in a new supply iu time for the next
issue.

Oar Little Mark.
AltTIOI.K No. I.
The progress of Orangeburg in ma
terial prosperity ha-1 long bjeu note I,
not only by those who live within the
corporate limits, and naturally pride
themselves ill her development, but
it has always b-jen t'tJ subject of tho
pen of the chronicler who visits her
borders. Though twice, within t!i i
recollection of our inh ibitanti she lias
been desolated by tho fiery fiend,
such is her innate power of recupera
tion, ?hat she has risen LMuuuixliko
from her ashes, and llappod her wings
in triumph and exultation over all
her misfortunes.
But it is left tar us, and it is our
inestimable, privilege, t> ohroniclo
her lollies! step ill ilia si rid h of pro- I
grcss-?not in the groveling things of
the material?but in tho purer and
more elevated atmosphere of tho
intellectual world. We verily be
lieve that she is ahmt to develop, and
present to the world, an ithcr Mark
Twain. We think that it is a signifi
cant coincidence?indeed it n pro
phetic, that the word twain means
two. And the interpretation is, that
the world is to have a Mark No. '2,
and Orangeburg isto have the hono r
of producing him. Of course ho is now
iu embryo, nnd therein!o we christen
him Our Little Muh. But wo beliovo
if ho keeps on, and don't get discour
aged, in time ho will make a marft .
Wo believe ho is going to write a
book. But when we say that he wil_
make '/ murk, don't understand us to
moan that Mark that cornea aftwr
Matthew and before Luke. \V. don't
venture that much. We only mean
big Mark No. 2.
There are one or two hints however
that we would throw out to hasten the
development. In the first place big
Mark wrote for the big priperj. In>
the second place he travelel about
and interviewed Jeff Davis and Ulay
?es and the other big bugs. Again it
is said that in ancient manuscripts,
wherever the writer intended an im
pression to be produced, ho would
indicate the same by interlining in
the manuscript, and the appropriate
emotion in the delivery. Now we
don't mean to say that we can't sec 1
the point, but wc think that iu this
fast age, a great deal of time, and
space too, would be saved if our sub
ject would distinguish his points iu the
same way by a little mark.
We expect, his nost theme
will bo Narr?gansett Piers,
where Roscoo flourished, for
when he spoke of "Bill Orange"
he must have meant "Bill Sprague."
There are many other thing* in
reference to Oar Little Murk that we
have to say, but, as this must only be
regaided as the introduction to tho
subject, wo will retrain until the
second stage of development takes
plae5.
His genius 13 worthy of song and
story. Tho story will be continued
as we said, but the song must await
the promptings of the poetic flamo
which of course must bo left to nature
and must not bo forced.

Straw and Leaves Continued.
Mr. Editor:
I attach so much importanco to
this subject, that I must giveyou &
few more practical remarks. I have
stated that I use*1 oOO two borso loads
on my farm tho present year, and
-00 last year Has it paid me? You,
in your comments on my farm au
swered this question, and a dozen of
our best farmers, who visited my
farm, agree with you, that there is
virtue in straw. NoW Mr. Editor, I
would net have my brother farmers to
think that I rely on straw alone. I
use it as an adjunct. It is valuable
as a preventive of rust, in cotton,
and yel'ows iu corn. I would not
say that the first application of straw
will effectually prevent rust, but
several years application with straw
seems to givo health, vigor and lon
gevity to the plant. I think 1 have
said enough, and used enough to
satisfy the incredulous, that there is
good in straw, ami that a continuous
application iu conjunction with other
fertilizers w ill bring our impoverish
ed soil to a high degree of productive
lies.-. Critic is not the only man who
believes in straw. 80 years ago, I
hi ught a place adjoining an old
gentleman who had straw annually
hauled direct from tho forest to his
cotton fields. I watched tho effect.
Cotton remained green till frost.
Usual yield per acre, 800 lbs seed
cotton, according to agcnt3 statement
From this very place our indefati
gable cotton grower, Ex Sbcrifl'Dukos
learnt the value of straw. He thinks
straw with salt equal to guano. I
have another old gentleman a be
liever in stra'tr, M r. B, Grifith, whe
rests his corn lands by hauling straw
and spreading thereon. His crops of
peas arc unparalleled. Critic has a
standing order on his place, that is,
when not otherwise employed, to haul
straw. Straw and leaves will toll on
the crop for several years.
