It is with pain that we learn of tho

New York on Tuesday.
His illness has been of long dura

poison received into his .system from
a cut in the baud while engaged in
the dissect ing room. Dr. Darby was
reared in St. Matthews, where he
leaves many relatives.
Ho was a man ol' unusual talents,
anel having enjoyed great ad\ in lugea
of acquiring knowledge, he became
?me of the most distinguished physi
cians of the United States, occupying
prominent positions in New York,
Philadelphia and in this State. His
father died in Ornhgcburg but u few

Gen. Preston, his father-in-law,

Improvements of a substantial

which auger well for the future pros

The Reliucry of .Mr. Cornels.>n has
been started, which, when completed,
will prove an incalculable benefit to
the whole community. The founda

Whon wc look back and boo the
progress of Orangoburg it seems to
us that every citizen should lud
gratified. Seven years ago there was
but one main street. To day there
nie two others running parallel with
Russell, opening up a quantity of
new nud beautiful building lots, u
large number of which have been
built up with neat ami comfortable
dwellings, and still there is room.
Uthcr cross streets are now needed
between tho. Railroad and the street
by Doyle's store, as we have bt fore
urged, and wo are glad to learn Lhat
one i.s now in contemplation.
Resides this, tho big lire swept
away a number of wooden buildings
which has been replaced with sub
stantial brick ones, giving an air of
com forluble permanence.
\Ye believe there are few interior
towns which have improved more
ittrcly and rapidly than ours, and wo
don't know of u County which oilers
better chances foi making an honest
living.
Let us go to work with new vigor

Since the South Carolina Railroad

a high-hauded injustice has been
practiced upon the people in the

Tcaclu'r'h Institute?
In another column wo print the
official report of tho proceedings ol
this Institute which was formed in
the Court 1 loose on Saturday. We
regret to note the exceedingly .-mall
turn out.
There can hardly be less than run
hundred teachers in the County, and
yet with all the communications and
references to the subject, and with
the known fact that Maj. Thoiliptoil,
Superintendent of ICdiication would
he present to address the met ting,
only IS teachers, male and female,
white and colored were enrolled.
These organized by the selection of
the various officers. For tho Presi
dency the contest was between Mr.
Sheridan a.id Prof. Holloway, the,
odier gen;lumen, as soon as named,
having declined.
The result of the vote was 10 for
the former, and 8 for the. latter. ?
We hope lhat there may be sonic
excuse for the small attendance, and
that the next meeting may be larger
and more enthusiastic. A greater
interest in the cause of education,
and an elevation ami improvement
ol the profession of teaching is need
ed; and if tho Institute is properly
conducted both objects may bo at
tained.
Maj, Thompson's speech was excel

.t Higher Graded School?
Wo have spoken of this need in
Orangeburg before, but we are so
thoroughly impressed with its impor
tance that wc will keep the matter
before the people. Wo do not ex
pect in any way to be benefit ted
pel tonally by the change which wc
propose, therefore our notice should
not be attributed to self-interest..
All we want is a well organized and
thoroughly equipped grade ! school
of a high standard, as may be found
in almost e very County in the Stute.
Private cflorls cannot accomplish
it with the necessary satisfaction. Con
solidation, and the co operation of tho
lax-payers is necessary. They must
put their hinds to the wheel. There
must be a competent Hoard of Trus
tees to have control, and the teach srs
must be the be-t, and well paid, au 1
the school must bo und ;r tho most
systematic and wholesome discipline.
Hon. Samuel Dibble, who is on the
Board of Examiners, and our worthy
School Commissioner ahotil 1, an 1 w e

this line for the educational intere sts

Maj. Thompson, our State Super
intendent of Education, in his
speech on Saturday, showed the
sp'ci.did working of such graded
schools elsewhere, and wc see nothing
; to prevent tho inauguration of the
I system liei e.
J We ha* e heard many of our citi

i the scheme.
In tho interest of Orangeburg wo
commend the matter to Lite sori jus

Wo warn the whites tose;}) iL
