The wounds were inflicted in the arm and near the left hip. Had it not been for the timely arrival of Drs. A. d. 11 il l. brand recently hilled three ol hi.- dogs supposed to be mud. The disease seems to be widespread on Bull Swamp. On Goodland Swamp, Mr. J. E. Cooper recently buried fourteen hounds and ono hull dog. The symptoms were somewhat peculiar. The day before dying a sore appeared on side of the mouth, attended with much itching, which, when scratched, caused considerable pain, as the yelp ing ol the victims, which could be heard at a cons iderable distance, pla inly showed. I'crKoiiitl ? Kev. W. J. Snider of St. Matthews passed by out depot on Tuesday on his way to the Southern Baptist Con vention in Atlanta to which he has been sent as a delegate. We see by a correspondent to the "News and Courier" from Whiter boro, that our esteemed t iwiisman, Mr. John Lucas, is in that unfortu nntc town giving valuable advice us to the architectural improvement and rebuilding of the place. There is no more, valuable crop than the sorghum or sugar cane, as the experience of every farmer will testify. Our lands are well adapted to its growth, and tho proximity of this refinery establish men t will en hance the value of t ho crops Let our farmers consult with Mr. Cornelson, and make arrangements in time for a profitable co-operation between the manufacturer and agri culturist. Such enterprises tend to build up our country. { A Strange Visitor? j Mr. H. O. Smoak, tho mail carrier from Orangeburg to Vances Ferry, J brought iuto our oilico on Saturday a bird of such strange and uncom mon plumage and appearance that it puzzled, not ouly the whole of the ! Times corps, but many of our most knowing citizens who crowd jd i n to ! take a peep at tho stranger, to give its proper classification. Probably, with a proper d esc rip ? ion, our esteemed contemporary, t'ie "ISews and Courier,'' may give us the name, as it is evidently a visitor from the seaboard. The bird was killed by Mr. Smoak in a pond near Col. Edward's resi dence on the Slate Road, about fif teen miles from Orangehu rg, on Saturday morning. It weigited about ? p muds, ami measured about 4i leet from the tips of one wing to the other, and 2J feet from beak to tail. ? he breast is a solid white, and the back black, speckled with while. The wings are very .-n.all und white inside. The tail is very short. The beak is very heavy and sharp pointed and about 3 inches long. It is Web footed, the feet being .-et far back, apparently for standing upright when i on land, ami for propelling while in water. Some say it is a wurdoon. and others a pinguin. The scheme should meet w ith every encourage ment. Dime Heading at Court House - A 1'leasaut Evening? 'I he third of the series of Dime Headings under the auspices of the V. M. C. A. came ofTut the Court House on last Friday evening. Ina literary point of view the success of the evening was fully equal to 'hat of the previous entertainments of the kind we have recently enjoyed in Orangeburg, al ihnugh pecuniarily it may not have been so in consequence id the audience being somewhat diminish d by a masonic or odd fel lows meeting occurring on the same evening. Mr. W. B.Thompson acted as master of ceremonies and intro duced the various pieces. The fir.>t piece was a thrilling pro duct of the brains of that erratic genius Edgar A. Poe, entitled "The Tell Talo Heart" most eloquently declaimed by Prof. Lawrence. The picture of tho conscience smitten heart was admirably given by the speaker. The next piece was an extract Tom the w ritings of the well known hum orist Mai k Twain entitled, "Punch Brothers Punch," which was well read by L'apt. M. Glowr, and favor ably received by the audience. T he next piece was Cowper's beauti ful "Address to th e Portrait of hit Mother," touchingly rendered by Bev. U. A. Darby, whoso voice and manner well suited the sentiment which impressed his hearers. Al'tor this Prof. Lawrence by par ticular request was brought out again who gave this time tho humor ous story of "Socrates Snooks,1' which literally brought down tho house, tho adaptation of the stylo of tho speaker to tho two characters in the colloquy being inimitable. Mr. Henry Kohu by ie>piest ad ded to the life of the occisiou by several humorous songs which were loudly applauded. The excellent music, without which a large share of tho pleasure of these entertainments would be lost, was furnished by Mr. Kohu, Mrs K., Miss M . Mr. T. L. Wannamaker, Dr. L. S. Wolfe and Mr. P. W. All the public offices were found in good order. An iron safe and pigeon boles were recommended to be supplied for the Clerk of Court's office for the protec tion i| public property. Union of Sunday Schools* According to previous announce ment the various Sunday schools of the town, met at tho Lutheran Church on uiiday evening last at 4 o'clock, the object of the meeting was a union of the several schools for tho purpose of healing a<h'ms-es by severe 1 of our prominent citizens. The Church was tilled to its utmost capacity by the scholars and their many friends. The altar was beautifully decora ted?large bo uqucts of flowers being ' there in prolusion. Every thing showed that the ladies had done the ir part to make the meeting pleas ant. As we beheld these flowers around the altar, wo looked witii interest upon the young people us I sembled, many of w hom would at some future time lay their hearts a* ! living sacrifices upon the altar of Christ. The music on this occasion was excellent, being led by Mrs. J. A Hamilton. The exercises were opened with an impressive supplication to tho throne of grace by Rev. T. K. Legaro. The Superi nteudent ol the Metho dist Sunday schnol was first intro duced and proceeded to deliver an address appropriate lo the occasion IL endeavored to impress upon the children the importance of beginning I life aright in order to continue so; I and closed with a pathetic appeal to pnients to soe that their children I were trained up in tho way they : should go. dipt. J. A. Hamilton next ad dressed tko meeting in his usually happy and instructive stylo. Iis selected as his Mibject "Doing Right." Tho speaker showed that that man approximated nearest to his Creator who endeavored to do right under all j ci rcunistancts. His mind, well filled ' trith historic lore, was rjuick in bringing to our recollection, many instance's, in history, to prove the po ition he took. lie concluded by uiging upon parents the importance of inculcating into tho minds und hearts of tho young, a love of home as a bulwark against vice. The Rev. O. A. Darby delivered an interesting address. He besougtit the boys to show themselves truly noble, worthy followers of the'great and good men who bad preceded them on the stage of action; and above all he exhorted thexi to maintain a character for truthfulness. A speaker from each denomination was invited to address tho meeting, but all, from some cause, failed to he present, but those we have mentioned. | The meeting was pleasant and we ' ho; e productive o much good. I")AIN in the right side, under the edge of the ribs, increases on prea sure; sometimes the pain is in the left side; the patient is rarely able to lie on the left side ; sometimes the pain is felt under the shoulder blade, and it frequently extends to the top of the shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken for rheumatism in the arm. The itomach is affected with loss of *ppe titc and sickness; the bowels in gen eral are costive, sometimes alternative with lax; the head is troubled with pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy sensation in the back part. There is generally a considerable loss of mem ory, accompanied with a painful sen sation of having left undone some thing which ought to have been done. A alight, dry cough is sometimes an attendant. The patient complains of weariness and debility; he is easily startled, his feet are cold or burning, and he complains of a prickly sensa tion of th'? skin; his spirits arc low; and although be is satisfied that exer cise would be beneficial to him, yet he can scarcely summon up fortitude enough to try it. In fart, he distrust* every remedy. Several of the above symptoms attend the disease, but cases have occurred w here few of thern ex isted, yet examination of the body, after death, has shown the LITER to> have been extensively deranged. * AGUE AND FEVER.
