We notice by the "News and Courier," the death of this venera ble and highly respected citizen of South Carolina. Gen. Simons, in ante bellum days, took a prominent part in the politics of the Stale, lie was successively sent to the Legisla turc from Charleston, and somctiinos headed the delegation, receiving the highest number of vote?. In the memorable National Con vention, which assembled in C hurles ton, iu 18C0, he was one of the dele gates from South Carolina, and en joyed the honor of withdrawing the Si.nth Carolina delegation from the Convention, in a speech, which, for its dignity and conciseness, was high ly applauded. It is of course not ex peeled that this crop will ever super sede cotton us the staple crop of the country, but in as much as it will not at all interfere with the cotton crop, and as it will at least a little diversi fy our planting, it is a splendid auxii iary, and this ii so much advocated by all our most prominent planters. As it is too late this season to plant the sorgho to any large extent, milt I think al 1 our furniere tuny try a little of it, say from 1 to '20 acres, accord ing as they liave idle lande. It ha? also been proved in this County by actual experiments, that our stubbie lauds after the small grain has been rein tived, yields good syrup, an 1 1 would ad vis., all those not having any land ready now, to try some ofthat, as every body I hope has planted onls if no other small grain. By later experiments I think it will be found that our clay pea will be a splendid manure for the sorgho if applied the same as in Lousianu by being planted in the cane ami plowed under the following fall and winter We will he able by plant ng the early variety another season to tuuke two crops from one pi anting.
