"Respectable'' Murder.
The killing of Col. Alston by Mr.
Cox,an influential citizen, of Georgia
is freah iu tho minds of our readers.
A few days ago Col. Buford of Ken
tucky, a highly esteemed citizen, shot
down Judgo Elliott in cold blood,
because a case was decided against
him. Alluding to the anticipated
lynching the "New York Times''
fays: "Col. Buford is not tho sort of
mail to be in any danger of lynching
in Kentucky. He is too "high tuned*'
to be executed by mob law or regular
law."
The "News and Courier" says:
"These are bitter words, but there is
more truth in thorn than we like to
acknowledge. Thero is not exactly
one law for the rich and another for
the poor in the .South, but iu the
South, as in the North, the criminal
of gjod family and large means baa
ten chances of escaping punishment
where the humble citizen lias one."
This is a crying injustice to which
the whole world must plead guilty.
We don't expect the railleuiuni, but.
we must raiso our voice for justice
between the rich and poor. It is
wrong that so-called respectable
murderers should get clear, while the
unknown and moneyless criminal ia
compelled to expiate his guilt on the
gallows. The increase oi' this species
of crime i.s fearful, and unless a check
is put to it by the hanging of a few
of these "respectable ' murderers
there will be little safety to life. It
ia the duty of all iu authority to cor
rect the evil.
The Democrats Stand their
Ground.
The debate in Congress over the
appropriation bill wi .h the appended
legislation ngair tho military and
supervisors at the polls, has been long

nia were the most brilliant of the
session.

will be the position of the President.
Will he veto or not ? If he does,
mho will be the revolutionist'?
Tho Improvement of the Sanfee.
Through the efforts of Hon. M. C.
Butler, Congress has appropriated a
a large amount of money for tho
purvey nnd improvementof our rivers.
"We are glad to ace by the letter of
Mr. T. K. Legare, ?f Fort Motto, in
the Heirs and Couri that our people
arc not altogether blind to the ad
vantages of the scheme. The river
bottoms of the San tec are the best
and most valuable hinds in the State,
nnd if utilized would be an immense
addition to (he public wealth.
If the money appropriated is not
squandered or diverted, tin re i-^u. job
promise for us in this mutter.
We hope that Congressman O'Con
nor will look after the matter and see
that justice is done us.
Murder Near ?t. Stephens.
The murder of Mr. C. G. McCoy,
rear St. Stephens Pc| ot, ou the 1st,
bus created considerable feeling in
that community. Mr. McCoy was a
wealthy citizen and it is supposed
that he was killed for his money. At
the time ol the atrocious deed he was
repairing the Palmer bridges, and was
returning to the house of a friend
when the murderer concealed !> hind
a tree fired upon him und killed him.
His horse came home riderless, which
csusced bis friends to go iu search of
him until they found his dead b<>dy
in the road. No clue bus bcjn found
to the murderer.

in Chicago, a notorious Republican
city.

The Fraud Goes On.
Hayes has appointed D. T. Gor bin
Judge of the Supreme Court of Utah.

fraudulent President has provided
for tho Bcoundrels who helped him

grace to the country.
The trial of Willis Dent charged
with tho niuidcr of John J. Harris
in Columbia on the 7th of October
last, concluded last week iu his ac
quittal. Both were young men, and
tho tragedy was the lcsult of too
much whiskey and tho carrying of
concealed weapons.

the sale closed we found tho follow
ing articles knocked down to us:

lady friends whom we happened to

bids for the worthless articles.

going at large upon tbe Streets of the
Town of Orangeburg :

been made to Town Council of mad Dogs
having passed through the Town recently
and of their having bitten other Dogs, some
of which have since died of hydrophobia,
and as many other Dogs may have bee: t
hit cn, and may he attacked with the
disease at any time, thus endangering th e
