Our Sunday Field GIunh?
Lutheran Church?Rev. J. F.
Kiser took as his morning text:
"For I know hint, that he will com
mand his children and honschuld after
him, and they shall hcrp the way of the
Lord." He showed the importance
of daily family worship as a means
of lending the youth in ways of hon
esty, sobriety and truth. That it is
the duty of Christian parents to teach
their children the true way, 'und not
to b fl\e it In the child to choose for
himself when he Shall have arr.ved
at an age of disciction. He thought
that it should be a stunding rebuke
to even' cliristian father who has hot
a family altar, to know that among
the heathen every house his its
place of worship.
PnESItYTrrtaN ClIUKCH?Rev. J
D. A. Brown took as the subject of
his discourse in the afternoon the first
five verses of the 2nd chapter of
Judges in whicli is contained the ad
dress of the Angel of the Lord to the
people at Bo chini rebuking the child
ren of Israel for disobeying the com
mand.of Gcd in making leagues with
the people of the laud of Canaan. IL?
presented his subject under two
heads:
ltd. '1 he speaker, the Angel of the
Loid, the Supreme Ruler of the
.Universe; and therefore the import
ance and weight of th.; address.
2nd. The address. Under this
head he showed the sin of Christiana
leaguing with sinners and engaging
in their employments, and warned his
hearers that all suchJassociaU'Uis will
come up as "thorns" in our sides.
Methodist Church?Rev. O. A.
Tnrhy pi cached at night from the
?words: "Men ouyht always to pray."
He pointed out numerous exatnph s
in scripture of the obedience of this
command, viz : Daniel who ohiervo I
it at the peril of his life; Christ mi the
mountain top and in the lowly v.xle;
Paul and Silas in prison itPhillipi.
He explained that the word "men"
embraced the child, and the youth as
well as the adult. He believed that
the word "altcays" in the injunction
docs not mean that we should neglect
our business, but that we should al
ways be in the spirit of prayer. Dis
cussing the nature of prayer he closed
with the beautiful thought of Wesl cy,
that pray r is a spiritual respiration;
we breathe out a prayer; we inhale a
blessing.
EriscorAt Churuh?Rev. L. G.
Guerry preached hum the words
"In all points tempted Idee as we an
yet without sin." 'J he temptation of
our Lord isf a great mystery. In
oidcr to comprehend it we must have
a right understanding of bis human
nature. This was human ii?ture in
its original sinless condition. It
therefore had all the impulses of our
"wn hun.unity, except the sinful pro
pensity. >'or did his divine nature
interfere with his human in the exer
cise of any of its function.*, the two
natures being in themselves perfectly
distinct. The purpose of the tempi*
tion ?no two fohl: First, to show
that we also would be tempted;
secondly, to effect our restoration both
to the favor of God ami to holiness
of life. Christ's triumph ovev Satan
was not in the least by the interposi
tion of His divine nature, but solely
in His human nature, and by the
sustaining grace of the Holy Spii it.
He has redeemed as well as restored
us. He has therefore set an example
for us. Temptation therefore should
not be regnded as an evil, but as a
wholesome discipline. Ail'in yielded
to temptation and fell; Christ resisted
and prevailed. Let us endeavor by
the same grace to follow His glorious
example.

A IMvely S*'ene?
On last Saturday afternoon the
peace of our town was disturbed by a
lather serious canine broil. The un
pleasantness commenced about 4
o'clocki p. in., and lasted a consider
able time thereat ter. One ot the
belligerents was yny, but the other
appealed by no means blur. The
misunderstanding soon waxed warm,
and attracted the attention of the
populace by its ferocity. Merchant?
rushed from their stores, by-standets
became excited beyond description,
and every dry goods box within reich
was mounted by enquiring clerks to
w atch the progress id'events. Sir a
time the issue seemed extremely
doubtful, and the und by no moans
nigh Finn ly one of our law abid
ing citizens having the good order
and lair name of our town at heart,
rushed in b twecn the contestants
with the dete rmination to effect a set
tlement. After considerable club
bing and jerking, order was restored
and ?he citizens peacefully retired to
their places of avocation. Tho in
quiry, was made by some of the by
standers if they were mad dogs, but
the presumption is reasonable, with
so much biting and chohiug that they
must have got mad.
