Randall Elected Speaker.
On Mcnday the Democratic Cau
cus n el in Wusldugton nnd by a vote
of 75 to 57 nominated Saiu'l J. Ran
dall, of Pennsylvania, as Speaker.
On Tuesday Congress met and con
firmed the nomination against Gar
field, the Republican candidate, by a
voted 144 against 125. /
Latt wctk wc advocated tho elec
tion of Mr. Randall to this position
on broi^d grounds, and we believe if
the same iiue ol policy were adoptcJ
be the Dtusocratio Convention iu
nominating the next Presidential
candidate, that we would meet with
t-ucccEP. It was this policy that
elected Mr. Tilden last year, the first
Democratic success eines the electio..
of Mr. Buchanan.
Our Farmers.
1 his eins is emphatically the hank
htfie of the country. They feed all,
and "are "legitimately entitled to tho
highest respect, and the largest share |
in the legislation of the land.
Upon ihem depends inc prosperity
of the country. If they fail, all fail,
find if they prosper, all prosper. It is
unfortunate however that some times
this is not literally true, for often the
lien-holder gets his all, and becomes
rich in his misfortune.
Let the farmer look to his interest,
realize his importance, make his
power felt, and combine for the good
of himself, und the 1 ihd in which be
lives.
And now ab Spring is nbout setting
in" upon us with her balmy air and
merry carols, warning us that seed
time has come, Itt our farmers tee to
it that they plant le.-s cotton and
more provisions. Let thorn also
make their own manures. Let us
have "corn fields and cotton patches''
instead of "cotton fields and corn
. patches." Th'is plan will hr. ig pros
perity! ami make our farmers as they
should be ii'depondent.
