The Senate on Ex President
Davis.
In the Jennie of the United States
Hoar of Massachusetts in giving vent,
to his pent up and snnill sou led
hatred against Ex-President Davis
has ucLually paid him an exalted
although unintentional complimeat.
In advocating his amendment to tho
Pension bill for Mexican veterans to
exclude Jefferson Davis Crom its pro
visions, ami in alluding to ids leader
ship of the Southern Confederacy,
he says, "that gentleman ' IXtvisj ha?l
never given utterance to an expres
sion of regret for such attack, nor
had he followed the example of so
many of his associates by asking Con
gress to n move his political disabili
tits, lie spurned the cleiusns.y of
the Republic to day.''
This !s what rankles in the breasts
of such hum as Hoar who either have
not the innate sense of appreciation
lor Iho true, or feel the reproach
which the presence of such an c.xa'te 1
typo of human character always ex
ci ts. Their bile is excited because Mr.
Davis does not conceive that he Inn
done any thing for which to ask a
pardon, and therefore wont doit.
The .\</' s an.I {Jottrlcr may say that,
"there are comparatively lew men in
the South win) havo any seriouj lik
ing for Mr. Da*is;" but vveeitss.n
his independence, his consistency, his
calm consciousness of rectitu lo and
his defiant and exalted attitude in
challenging the United States to his
trial as worthy of admiration.
This is not disloyalty b it
principle. Whatever may b
Mr. Davis' faults of judgment in the
estimation of many, his pureand lofty
character is grandly illustrated in his
lite and deeds.
Mr. Hoar says, "he spurns tho
clemency of tho Republic." So he
docs. He aiks no cleinenry, but tho
justice of a trial which the Kcpablic,
distrustful of its came, fails to
give.
So far as a pension is concern .-.1
Mr. Davis wants none, having already
written a letter urging the passage of
the pension bill with his name ex
cluded /brevcr.
If misfortune has caused the deser
tion of friends, it brings no er.niching
of bis proud spirit.
Mr. Hoar knew all this full well;
and his advocacy of the amendment
to exclude from the pension list the
name of Mr. Davis, whu had moisten
ed the soil of Mexico with his blood
in defense of the Union, is mean
and contemptible, and its passage by
the Senate is a disgrace to so railed
honorable men.
