Editor ( rt;uis<l.i'ry Timm:
Dkai: Sik,
It Las bi t u tny purpose for some
time to direct public attention, to u
matter where public interest is in
volved; but < iie nnd another pre
ventive el a piivale nature intorpos
cd, and not until the present have I
been able to give the stibjei 1 the at
tention it merits. Mature relied ion
advises the County nowspap crs?as
the proper medium through which
to arrest, the attention of i hose con -
ccrncd; and I propose to do s > as
brielly and concisely as possible,
Doubtless very many be-ide myself
who have occasion to cr< s- the 10 listo
opposite the Village have noticed the
fact that the site of the present bridge
is a very unfortunate, and inconveni
ent one. The point where the Mfi.iuty
Six, Cannon's Bridge, and 1 >arnwell
Roads intersect each other and tap
the liver swamp, is a point immedi
ately opposite the Village, and w hore
the swamp is equally as narrow ii not
more so, than where the present
bridge is located. Be?ido this the
intervening ground is higher, and the
lake near river; thereby lessuin" tho
amount of embanking, ami bridging
to constitute it an admirable high
way. If you wil observe, after reach
ing the river by the present r< tile,
you are compelled by changing direc
tion at right angles to travel m iho
twt nip at lens.l a tptat ter of a mile,
encountering a broad, ami deep lake
und long causeway spanned by a
bridge nearly one hundred and fifty
yards in length, before you roach th i
main cnr&cway leading to the river
bridge, which causeway is also fenced
by some live or (Ltd b big i. A i 1
after reaching the ens: ban"; ?>' t!i ?
river by an oblique change ol direc
tion both to the right you
niusL travel nearly three quar
ters of a mile before the j
suburbs of the Village are re a el .
In addition to the long Ink- It-A I ?;
we havo now to k< cp up a foot way
over a quarter of a mile in !? a !'i ,
also. The annual cost ol the tw ?
must be at least one hundred dollars.
Now by changing the route acro.i the
swamp allow ing one on I if the
causeways to terminale at t!i iintersec
tion of the public roads, an 1 tho
other, stl or near the o'd lumber 'an I
ing on Village side, the dis auee
would be shortened near three Iburi i
of a mile, and tin; County save ! :t
yearly expense of 100 d dlarsor in ?..:
which is a consideration worth -in
attention to say nothing of the oth -.
advatdages to grow out of ? c';a igt
of much g?eater importance. It we
would prttperly husband lim?, it
would not require exceeding four
days to clear out and pit! in plan Ii 1
order the new route, and wo won! 1
lind if the lumber now used on the
old was transfer, d !o th ? n ?w r.ri I it
would Hour it. from 011? end to tho
other. Iu addition to the inleresi
which the pub ie generally shoa' 1
manifest in this change; the Village,
specially should contribute sonn:
thing toward its consummation as it
would if complct stl properly, give the
the citizens oftheto.vn, i '< autil'ul
promenade, and s o whore abotl! ev.i M
be found as pleasant a road lorn b.iggv
und horseback riding. The Cit /.^ns
of the Fork should by all nvans
interest themselves on thisc ilerii;\y.j
as it would enable them to get to
market by some nearer route, and >t
the same time avoid oho of m >sl disa
greeable and trying roads to man,
horse, and vehicle in the County.
"What say you County Commission
ers? Put your shoulders to the
wheels and rush the matter through
before the coming spring.
