Strike the ice-choke from the wheel,
The clog that death hath fastened.
With ruthless grip more stout than steel,
On homes by plague sore chastened.
'Tis true the graves are not yet green,
With nature's kind to-morrow,
And what of joy was vcetern ser-n
To-day's the friend of sorrow.
The loved are lying low.
Yet who hath time to sob and yearn?

We have no haart for woe.
The dead are dead, we loved them well;
Aye, too well to Oft parted,
As sable folds, and nent heads tell,

'Tis true the chairs and cribs arc left,
Without one smiling treasure,
And every house is wailing reft >

Yet life is left, aye stern hard life
It hath no charms for weepers,

Orangeburg Agricultural Society.
The following preamble and reso
lutions, a part of the minutes of the
proceedings of the Orangeburg Agri
cultural Society, were passed unani
mously by that body, and show in
some measure bow the calamity,
which has befallen the State in the
paiufui injuries from whi h Gov.
Hampton now suffers, touches the
great heart of the farmers of our
County. No class of our citizens has
the wise administration of Gov.
Hampton effected more benqfitially
than this. They seo in him more
promising springs for their seed tim^;
more abundant harvests, when the
year's work is ended; a new lease of
power for their estates and lowef
taxation to maintain them; and more
abundant labor and bettet laws to
utilize it. Indeed every pulsa of the
farmer beats freer and more hopeful
und it is but natural for them to give
expression to the sorrow which effects
them so deeply as a community:
Whereas, We have received re
liable intelligence of a serious acci
dent to His Excellancy Gov. Wade
Hampton, therefore;
Rcso'vcd, By the members of the
Orangehurg Agricultural Society
now in session, that we have learned
with the deepest regret of the calam
ity which has befallen the excellent
and honored Chief Magistrate of this
commonwealth.
Resolved, That, wo tender to him
our warmest sympathies during hie
painful suffering; and that an earnest
prayers shall oe offered up that his
valuable life may be spared to com
plete the noble and benevolent work
which his civil administration has so
successfully begun.
Resolved, That wo tender to the
members of his family also these kind
expressions of our sympathy which
is due under a dispensation which has
touched tenderly tho heart-pulsations
of the whole people of this great
Stato.
