Previous to the war, ami indeed sometime alter it, we were unacquain ted with County Convention* or tho history of their working*. Hiving but one political party, based up >n a single interest, there was no differ enccs to be adjusted and no p'at form of principles to be adopted. Every man, if so disposed, could announce himself a candidate and tvas voted for not because he was a Democra t and held any distinct political vi-^ws apart from his fellows, but because of social position or individual favor itism and was elected sol ely on the ground of personal popularity. Glover, John Felder and Aaron Iluigier came forward for the pudVages ol their fellow citi zens, and were elected both because of merit aud personal propularity. The record of the period past attest how faithfully they discharged the duties anil trusts so willingly impo sed upon them and our citizens, ovo n at this period, hold in honored mem ory the names of theso public sor - vants. An irresponsible rule for eight years, or more, has taught our peo ple that things have changed and that the-, methods, which were success ful before tho war, will not yield th c same results under the new oireuin stance-. An overwhelming majori ty of Radical votes stifled tho voico of the minority nnd defeated every effort, in tin way of appeals to the general government, by tilling the press of tiic North w ith the grossest misrepresentation. >So potent for evil did this Radical numerical strength prove itself, until the mino rity, rcpiiscnting the intelJigeuco and t!:' wealth ?.! the country, unit ing its forcct by one of those sponta neous uprisings, known only to a deeply w rouged ami oppressed people, as.M itt d the right of these elements to rule. It is for Carolinians to say, whether hers shall he a future of peace, pros perity and happiness, or the contrary one. of strife, shame and dishonor, Is it po.sihle. a heart beating iu the bosom of a true son of this country, devoid of animation, destitute of love and sympathy for Carolina, or in different to her future career. Can -there be a single one so cowardly, so depraved and dishonorable, as to forsake the lovely land, that shelters the remains of our forefathers,?so disinterested und unmanally, as to rolinguish to oi'.r country's comm >n inemy, the bright laurels of 187G, the hard fought battle, the honor, the glorious triumph purchased with blood and labor. No, a thousand times, no. South Carolina has again u ufurled that same banner, which lead to victory, fame and honor, which has been waving for nearly two yoars, pure and spotless; and with honor to our country's history. Upon its folds are again inscribed, in language of truth, n deemed , regenerated, disen thralled, and in the coming fight, she has the second time, chosen for her standard bearer, and chief in that contest, placed the trust in the hands of her noblest, truest and best son. Thousands, tens of thousands, of brave anil good men, in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tenncsce, and in fact the whole South, win) know the devotion of Wane Hampton to South Carolina, are watching to seo how true Ci.ro? niaus will prove to Wade Hampton. The world expects every man to do his duly. South Carolina calls upon all true and honest citizens, from the mountains, to the sea board, to rally around her standard, work, workout, her redemption. Our old mother pleads to tho brave, the good, of this county to rcscure her noble offspring Oraugeburg, from intire ruin ami disgrace. She calls upon you, to raise this tlo wn trodden county, from the depth of ten long years of the bitterest suffering; to put a final end, to the ignominy, the dis grace, that bus been her's to endure f rom tin; hands of the most dishonor able, cowardly sot of demons, over known, in the annals of a decent his tor . The desperate light is near at hand, the i.-suo is before you, the bat tle is pitched, the forces are marshal it 1 mi cither side. Upon the one is the Rcalowug and carpt-baggers, the grcal foe of our county, who have soiled her fair fame, degraded and di.vhou.orod her.as far as was iu their power, dragged her down impover ished, and on the verge of everlasting ruin and disgrace?their sole ambi tion and cry is, five years more of good stealing yet,?but I am assured these Radicals, cannot stcnl worth a cent, niter the seventh day of Novem ber next. Upon tho other baud, are arrayed against the enemy those Pons of Carolina, to whom her honor, is as dear as their lives, and who would with loving hearts, and strong hands, raise her up intirely from the ashes of her desolation, and place her onee again aside of her sister Democratic counties. Where is your place in that light? Re in the front, bo true to the old and honored record, of your State. Re men, act, in the living present, heart within and God over head. Action, constant immediate action, is the sesame which wilt open the prison doors of Crangeburg; and cany her onward to happiness, glory und prospeiity, far from the clutches of Radicalism and oppression. Re member that our county's salvation lies in a majority of representatives, and resolve that whoever is nomi nated by the coining Convention to be held in Orangcburg next week, that if co'.rage, energy and persever ance, will elect them, that thoir mimes shall be onrollod among the honorable sons, composing the Demociatic legi.-latnre. When that day of deliverance comes, it will be the sweetest, the noblest recollection of your lives, that you perform, d your duty faithfully and well, to your county, and to your God. Mr. Ltlitor, there was held at this place on last Saturday, a meeting of the Jamison Democratic club. Dr. A. J. llorger, Sam'l D. Dautzler, and Mr. Rol ert l<ilcy were elected delegates to attend the county con vention. They are all worthy men, and intitlcd to the confidence and respect, of the entire people. Dr. A. J. llorger seems to be tho favor*te , and is mostly spoken of, as the pro per man, to represent the citizens in this section of the county. With Dr. llorger to advocate them, they feel assured, that there would bo hopes for old Jamison yet. We can defeat the Radicals in Orangcburg county, all that is ne cessary is unity and action. With the bold and fearless stand the Times has taken to overthrow Radicalism; and with the performance by every citizen of his duty to tho welfare, of_^ the county, the result of tho coming election will prove nothing less til in a splendid Democratic victory. The citizens of the fever stricken cities and towns iu the West have appealed for help to sustain and sup port them in their deep distress. Orangeburg bos already forwarded a contribution. Could not this be ad ded to by means of subscription boxes iu the stores in which friends from the country might have nn oppor tunity to aid in this noble charity. The other towns on tho line of the Railroad might also adopt the same plan and thus assist those whose dis tresses can not bo fully realized o ven from the intencc reports reachin g in through the daily papers. Let us all arouse ourselves to tho help of tho Buffering ones in our sister States. Charity. Mr. Eilitor : Our little Station has been arous ed to an unusual degree over tho st range freak of a mad dog. On Sunday last while wo wore enjoying a quiet evening with Mr. Richard's family, a mad dog appear ed at the gate, jumpted a live foot fence and came at a tremendeous speed toward ihn house, jmssed the front door where Mr. Richards was* sitting, and entered the house, from the rear. The first thing tho dog came in contact with was a cat upon w hieb he sprang at first sight, when Mrs. Richards hasten to relievo tho cat from its perilous condition. The dog immediately seized her by the baud but it was quickly withdrawn without even a scratch. We succeed ed iu killing the mad animal but not until ho had bitten the yard dog. Stilton an.
