J/.lar left for Bamberg on Thursday morning where he has been invited to address the Bamberg Guards on their Anniversary occasion. This Company belongs to the General's Brigade and a wann welcome, no doubt, will be given him. The Bam berg Guards entered the late war early in the contest, fought bravely through the whole trying season, and have a record as noble as any com many in the country. The events which make up this record, will doubt less allbrd the General an inspir ing theme, and the intimate relation between him and them as commander and soldiers will make the occasion a glorious one. ?mmp~ ? <r-.?-. - ??The concert given by the colored people on last Monday night was a gratifying success. A goodly number of our white citizens encouraged tbeni by their presence. This is as it should be, and wherever encourage* incut can be given our colored citi zens in their efforts to do good, it. be comes our duty to extend it. Noth ing is better calculated to break down nonsensical prejudices than such a recognition of the obligation we owe each other. We congratulate our colored,friends upon the musical talent displayed on that occasion. The performance was really line and commendable. Bishop Haven and other person ages of note were there. ( LA FL IX ( UM ME XL 'EM ES T? Un Tuesday last the Annual Com mencement exercises of this institu tion began and closed Wednesday evening. Rev. K. J. Menardie of Columbia made the Anniversary Oration before a large audience, c-i u ? posed of both white and colored people, all of whom unite in assert ing that this was one of the finest ? It is impossible to do justice to it in the limitted space allowed this article; sut?ce it to say, tbercfoie, thai Mr Menardie met fully the expectation of his I friends and his liberal sentiments, coupled with a sincere interest in behalf of education for the colored people, will long be remembered by them in this County. Wednesday was appointed for the Anniversary Exercises of the stud ents, mid, accordingly at two o'clock, a large crowd of colored people and an encouraging number of white citi /.ens, assembled in the College Chap.: I to witness the performances. We noticed a goodly number of gentle men, not unknown to fame, lipo.I th ? rostrum, among whom were Governor Hamptou, Bishop Haven, tl?ghS. Thompson Supcntendaut of Ed cation, Rev. E. J. Menardie, D. I)., Rev. I. S. K. Legare, ('apt. John H. Hamilton, Mr. George Boliver, Hon. R. B. Elliott, Judge J. J. Wright and Rev. Russ of Cincinnati. On entering the Chapel a program me of the exercises and a chair (for thelastwe tender our grateful thanks) were place-1 at our disposal. A care ful survay ol th sit uation and a hast y glance over the programme plainly indicated that we were booked for a three or four hours heat, as twenty nine boys and girls were to d;> justice to the occasion. The time, however, Wils enlivened by iustrumental and vocal music by the pupils, which wo pronounce lino. The improvement of the natural talent of tho colored people for music by the tuition of ex perienced teachers, was very manifest, and there is abundant reason for en - courngeinent in this department. 11 would bo scarcely right or fair to make any discrimination between the boys and girls, all of whom did well for their opportunities; however we cannot close without mentioning a few names ol those who, in our judg ment, deserve special notice; of t he young men are Charles Martin, John MeCall, Win. Bulkier, Shadrac Thomas, 0, A. Cottiughaiu and Jack son Cooper; of the girls, Alice Juck ?on, Ellen Smith, Eugene Middleton, Addie Harte and Angelina Gibson. The prize for elocution was award* cd by tlie Committee to Charles Mar liu. After these exercises Bishop Hav en and Hon. II. 1>. Ediott addressed the meeting, the latter of whom as serted in very p ain and uniiirtliiied terms that the colored people were not satisfied with the management of the Univeisity. We think the Board of Trustees wou'd have been the bet ter place lor this speech. It marred somewhat the en joy in -lit of tho occa sion.
