Bull has removed to his old stand, one door above T. K oh it's. Ve are sorry to lose Mr. Bull from this part of our town, but wish him BHiese?S whenever ho may stop. Huvc you been to \V. M. Sato's store where the liest groceries, liquor.'*, tobaccos, &e. ate kept '! If not, go at once and [enjoy the ndvontages ol the bert goods at the lowest prices. Prof. (aro, I.egei(h-ntainist nitd Ventriloquist, performed his wonder ful tricks in our town three nights this week to paying audiences and we believe to the satisfaction of every one. We learn that Dr. Iv/.ckiel Thomas, colored, of England, of whose won derful powers we made a note hist week, is a humbug. Well! there's one consolation^ the Doctors were sold along with us. The Captain who commanded the Company at Mr. Cart's Faun, in *tbe Full of 1863, will much oblige by sending bis address to "L," care of Letter Carrier No. 12, Richmond, Va. The Company was, I think, ironi Orangeburg. Rev. A. P. Nort is is on a visit to his family in our town aud seems to enjoy his usual good spirits and health. He has in charge the First Baptist Church of* the City of Troy, Alabama. We learn that this church has a large membership ami is in a prosperous condition otherwise. Wenotice that Messrs. D. E.Smoak & \i.'o. have made needed improve ments on their store one door above Marocey's Hotel?enlarging its en pa city and increasing its convenience. Thi3 is a tangible sign of material prosperity for this enterprising firm as well as nn improvement to our town. _ Mr. Geo. H. Cornelson is a man of enterprise; his store is a place oi busi ness activity, his clerks are skilful salesmen?courteous and attentive; and Iub stock is the most varind, best assorted and largest in town. Such long continued success can only be uccou nted for upon the principles of the best goods at the cheapest rates, fair dealing and punctuality in busi uefcs transactions,?these will win and hold tho confidence of a community. Wc call attention to tho slock of spring goods he advertises in to-day's issues. We nie requested to aunouncc that thero will be a drill of the Edisto Rifles on Monday evening next. Members will assemble at the Court House at 5J P. M. sharp. This Company deserves great praise for the profieicucy in drill of its members; but a more general turn out is vory desirable, gentlemen. Nothing in the shape of Yeast Powders can compare with the Ex- | celsior -Baking Powder. Nothing 1 injurious enters into its composition. It's economy to use it, as you pay only for the powder, nud not for tin ! boxes and fancy labels Prepared fresh every week and for sale by Dr. J. G. Wannamakc.r. Price 23 and ."30 cents packages A revival of religion has been in progress in the colored Baptist Church for two weeks or more. We learn that thirty-eight persons have been baptized already, and as many more .have presented themselves as candidates for the ordinance. This is a good work and we hope our colored friends will not grow weary in well doing. They have an inviting field and we bid them (Jod speed. We saw a head of wheat a few days since, grown by Major.) II iiydrick on Bull Swauip. mras iiiug seven inches in .length and ih? grain not matured upon it. The Major has a lic'd of ' seventeen acre.- pretty generally interspersed with such heads, caused by the rust b ight. In view of the importance of this crop to our people, we would suggest experiments with the sulphur, ami salt and ashes as indicated in the Timms of last week. It was by such mi ans that Mr. Cnrwile of New berry discovered that, blue stone was a pi cventative for smut in wheat. We would -call attention of our readers to the auction notice of G. D. Kortjohn. This business, though something new in our midst, has as sumed large proportions, everybody taking advantage of the many bar gains which are offered Auction days are Saturdays and 1st. Mondays, and in addition to this, this enter prising house have agreed to hold Saturday night auctions for the bene fit of the working class wdio cannot attend the day sales. We have at tended these sales and can guarrant.ee bargains. Farmers who cannot make it convenient to attend the sales will bo repaid by calling at this house on any day where they will sjli atCaar priccs. The friends and former customeis of Mr. J. S. Albergotti will find him with this house. Call on him and be convinced of what we say. ? . * . -a?ii i ?- ? ? On Wednesday morning about 7 o'clock A. M., four prisoners, charged with burglary, mado their escape from the jail. Three were recaptured but the fourth successfully evaded his pursuers and is now at large in the country. The jailer going fir water, left the doors J unfastened, and the prisoners came down stairs, con cealcd themselves in tho closet be neath the steps and made their escape when Loyd had retu rned and was up stairs attending his business. This is the second lime prisoners have escaped from jail within the last two or three months. If this is to con tinue it will cost the county less to throw jopen the prison doors ami abolish the offices of Sheriff and .Jailer; but, if to diminish crime, it is necessary to haven jail and, of aeon sequence, a jailer ami a sheriff, thou let us have such officer as will keep the prisoners securely, that the county suffer no unnecessary expense, or the property of citizens, hazard from crime. - m ? ? mm A very useful sheep is kept on a steamer playing between San Fran cisco and Stockton. He is trained to go out on a gang plank at a lau ling when a flock is to he loaded, to show that the approach is safe, and to ac: as a pilot. The Antecedents of Disease. Among the antecedents of disease are in crtnexrt in the circulation of the blood, an unnaturally attenuated condition of the physique, indicating that the lite current is deficient in nutritive properties, a wan haggard look, inability to digest the food, loss of appetite, sleep and strength, and a sensation of unnatural languor. All these may he regarded as among the indication of approaching disease, which will eventually attack the system and overwhelm it, if it is not built up and fortified in advance. In vigorate, then, without loss of lime, making choice of the greatest vitalizing agent ex tant, llostetter's Stomach Hitters, an elixir which has given health and vigor to my riads of sick and debilitated, which is avouched by physicians and analysts to he pure as well as effective, which is immense ly popular in this county, and extensively used abroad, and which has been fur years past one of the leading medicinal staples of America. may 11 lm Dobbins Electric Soup. Having obtained the agency of this eclebrnted soap for St. Matthews and vicinity, I append tho opinion of some of our best people as to its merits : We have used Dobbins electric, soap made by J. L. Roiling the clothes is entirely unnecessary and but very little rubbing is needed. Ml?*. D. I). JuNRR, " J. N. Fotw.i:, " A. II. Kowicur. " M. 1*. Way.
