On Saturday la-it a Mr. Michel and a friend on their way from Branchville to their homes in Colle ton, got into a quarrel and assumed threatening positions towards each other. Fischer, of tin exhibition of Bible and Moral Scenc3 for the aid of the Lutheran Church in this town. Sunday Schools will be ad mitted at the reduced price of 10 cts. for each pupil. It is hoped that Mr. Fischer will bo encouraged in his efforts to aid tho Church by a full attendance. The exhibition is said to be fine, and the purpose is certain ly a laudable one, therefore while being lutunlly hciicfUtcd by attend ing we enjoy the 'witifefactton of knowing that our money will bo appropriated to a benevolent object.. - i?? - - mwnm. -??? Our tax pnyeis will do well to remember the different itonis and be prepared in time. There is sonic encouragement to pay taxes now and there will be still greater next year whon the government shall he more, com pie to y our own with not a dollnr to go into the hnnds of a Northen thief or a fouthern robber. The following is complete for Orangeburg County : State taxes 4J mills; County, 3; school, 2; past indebtedness, 1; school claims of 1870-77, 1 mill; total, 11 j mills. ?mn- ? - ? -?a? -- - In our last issue wc publishc 1 an account of the death of Mr. Beck's little son from drinking Belladonna, in which it should have been stated that while Mr. Bock was absent from the house and bis wife in bed sick, the little child, unobserved, placed a chair in position ami climbing up to the niantle-poicc, got the bottle con turning me iiiixuire, uun tiiiiinv it uu f .rc the mother was able to prevent it. Physicians were at ouco calle 1 in, who u*ied every menus for the child's restoration but failed; death ensued after six hours Buffering. The child would have been two years old the twenty-fifth of this month. After the funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. O. A. Brown nl Mr. Beck's resilience, the child was buried in the Preshyterian grave-yard. We are pbused to report that Mrs. Heck has nearly recovered from her illness. ???> ??? <??? - Our community has been again visited by tho reaper, Death. Dating the last ten days the bell has sum moned our citizens to the funeral services of four of our young friends, and on Wednesday last mir entire community, ami many trout the. sur rounding country, gathered at the cemetery to pay their last respect to our young townsman, Mr J Wallace Cannon 11c was buried by the Masonic Kratern ity aided by the Fire Department of our town. The cere monies on this occasion, were striking ly solemn, mid all returned to their homes deeply impressed by the scene to which ihoy were witnesses. Mr. Cannon was n native of North Carolina, and came to this town years ago with the hope of spending a long and happy life. He was a fining man of a high sense of honor and of course made a fast friend and a good cit1/.en. The crowd in attendance at h is burial attest the esteem in which be was held by the community. Fl HE IS IHK WOODS - On Sunday evening the air wiu filled with smoke suggesting fire somewhere in the adjoining forests. As the night approached the whole sky seemed lurid with the reflected light, and the country north ami east of this point appeared to bo all ablaze Fears were entertained that a large amount of property was being destroyed, and that the fanning com munities would be seriously hindered in their operations by the loss of fencing &c These apprehensions weroj not unfounded, for news have been received from almost every quarter of our County telling of the distress of the inhabitants and de struction of property. Tho following are some of the items gathered as best we could from parties visiting the town: Mr. Morgan Hughes of tho Fork has lost all his out-houses and only saved the dwelling by the most stub born resistance. Other* in his neighborhood Buffered more or less, but not so seriously. Mr. John Jordan's mill in tho Fork was entirely destroyed. Other damages of the neighborhood were considerable, but the extent not re ported. Mr. Tagcr is perhaps tho greatest Hufforer, havieg lost his entiro premises hy tho raging clotucnt; also a work-ox was burned to death before assistance could be rendered, Mr. Jacob Sanders, across tho river, lost heavily in fencing, also A mas Gleaton, Gideon Blume and others, whoso names wo could not obtain, suffered moro or loss in fencing, &c. Mr. J. 1?. Wannnmakcr and others north of this point on tho line of railroad, also Mr. Dukes and others south, lost heavily in fencing, and will be seriously hindered in their crop operations. Mr. Jacob Wolfe from Bull Swamp informs us that the lire burnt up a great deal of fencing in that vicinity. Our exchanges from Columbia, Augusta, Aikeu and Williston report heavy losses in their respectivo neighborhoods. Houses and fencing were destroyed in the upper ptrt of Itichland. The residence of Mr. Jones, 111 c miles from Columbia, together wi.h all his worldly goods were consumed; and the neighbors had to plough the ground to keep the fira from their hoiuss. In tho county of Aiken no less than six dwelling hjuacs an 1 a largo p> r tion of the fencing, have been destroy ed. It is said the Laugley Factory has suffered at least one thousand dollars in losses. Iii Georgia it is said that similar fires prevailed along the Central Railroad and in other sections of tho State. At this date the extent of the fire is not known, but it is feared that when all the damages are ac curately reported they will foot up a very high figure, as insurance in country localities is seldom known Oaanoeburg Hion Scnoor.
